Job Summary:

The City of Columbia, Missouri is seeking a highly motivated and dependable individual to provide professional-level police services to our community. As a Police Officer, you will be responsible for enforcing laws and ordinances, detecting and preventing crime, and completing administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures safety and security of citizens by enforcing laws and ordinances.
  • Maintains and develops partnerships and relationships with citizens and community organizations.
  • Conducts investigations; collects and examines evidence.
  • Patrols city roadways, enforces traffic ordinances, directs traffic, and investigates traffic accidents.
  • Adheres to legal protocols and processes.
  • Participates in ongoing training and maintains required certification and licensure.
  • Provides court testimony as necessary.
  • Performs administrative duties; completes and maintains accurate records and documentation.
  • Instructs and mentors co-workers.
  • Participates in meetings.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate's Degree or 2 years of college in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Sociology, or related field preferred.
  • Relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Departmental policies and procedures.
  • Law enforcement vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology.

Work Environment:

The Police Officer will work in a variety of environments, including office settings, outdoor environments, and confined spaces. The position requires the ability to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Exposures:

The Police Officer may be exposed to hostile or irate individuals, individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold and heat, communicable diseases, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises.

The City of Columbia, Missouri offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including paid academy tuition for non-POST certified officers. The starting salary for Missouri POST certified officers is $60,008 annually, with a maximum salary of $73,153.60 annually.
