Public Works Director

Citrus County, FL is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Works Director to lead our team in delivering high-quality services to our citizens. As a key member of our organization, you will be responsible for planning, directing, and evaluating the services provided by the Department of Public Works.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate the work of assigned staff, reviewing and evaluating employee performance and completing performance evaluations.
- Drive and/or operate a county vehicle or equipment, obeying all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
- Ensure divisions perform duties in a manner that promotes safety, health, and welfare of the public, and comply with established regulations.
- Consult with County Administrator, the Board of County Commissioners, department heads, and contractors regarding public works construction and maintenance activities/projects.
- Attend and participate in Board of County Commissioners' meetings, reporting on research, special projects, and other relevant information.
- Respond timely to inquiries from the Board of County Commissioners, administration, citizens, citizen groups, and other county departments to schedule work and provide status reports of current and future projects.
- Confer with local, state, and federal agencies on regulations and requirements for public works activities.
- Prepare and implement annual work plans, goals, and objectives, reviewing all plans for system improvements and development activities.
- Provide preparation and input to the annual budget process and monitor operational expenditures.
- Assess and monitor workload, administrative and support systems, and internal reporting relationships, identifying opportunities for improvement and directing and implementing changes.
- Serve as one of the County's resources for technical engineering expertise.
- Prepare and present recurring reports and special reports and programs as needed.
- Participate in professional organizations, keeping up to date on issues and events affecting public works.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
- Five (5) years of relevant experience in Civil Engineering and/or Public Works, in which three (3) years of this experience must have been in an administrative/managerial capacity.
Certifications and Licenses:
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Florida.
- Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment:
- Requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
- The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 20 pounds.
- The job requires frequent balancing, and occasional bending and squatting.
- The job requires the completion of tasks that involve typing, simple grasping, operating foot controls/levers, and driving automotive equipment.
- The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception, and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
