Position Overview

Role Summary:

The Certified Medication Aide (CMA) is responsible for overseeing caregiver staff during their shifts, ensuring high-quality care for residents, and maintaining the philosophy of the residence while prioritizing resident welfare. The CMA will administer prescribed medications to residents in compliance with state laws and Oaks Senior Living policies. Additionally, the CMA will deliver personalized care, adhere to Oaks Senior Living protocols, respond to emergencies, and uphold residents' rights to safe and confidential treatment.


Essential Qualifications:

  • At least one year of experience in a Senior Living setting.
  • Preferred supervisory experience in healthcare or service sectors.
  • Must possess a Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate.
  • Must hold a Georgia Certified Medication Aide Certificate.
  • Good standing with the Georgia CNA/CMA Registry is required.
  • Proficient in English communication (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Must exhibit a friendly and caring demeanor with a passion for working with seniors.
  • Minimum age of 21 years; satisfactory criminal background check is necessary.
  • Completion of a physical examination by a licensed physician and a negative drug screening is required.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Key Responsibilities:

Resident Care Services

  • Execute all assigned duties effectively as directed by the Wellness Director or Executive Director. Supervise caregiver staff to ensure quality care aligned with Oaks Senior Living standards.
  • Follow each resident's Negotiated Service Plan and promptly inform the Wellness Director or Executive Director of any changes in resident health.
  • Respond immediately to resident requests for assistance.
  • Seek guidance from the Executive Director or Wellness Director for any uncertainties regarding medication administration.
  • Assist with meal service and oversee caregiver staff in the dining area, ensuring cleanliness post-meal.
  • Prevent infection by adhering to standard precautions and properly disposing of hazardous waste.
  • Foster positive relationships with residents and their families.
  • Handle resident emergencies following established protocols.
  • Help create and maintain a caregiver staff schedule that meets resident needs while ensuring adequate staffing.
  • Address on-the-job injuries according to Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Complete required continuing education units (CEUs) biennially and annually as specified by the Alliant GMCF Registry.
  • Promote teamwork and exemplify the Oaks Senior Living philosophy.
  • Maintain an open-door policy for staff to discuss concerns or grievances.
  • Keep CPR and First Aid certifications current.

Medication Management

  • Adhere to the six 'rights' of medication administration: right resident, right drug, right dosage, right time, right route, and right documentation. Verify these rights at three critical points: when retrieving the medication, just before administration, and immediately after.
  • Administer medications according to the Medication Observation Record (MOR) while safeguarding resident privacy. Document all medication-related actions accurately following Oaks Senior Living policies.
  • Respect residents' rights to refuse medication and ensure their safety during administration. Clearly explain the purpose of each medication prior to administration.
  • Monitor residents for adverse reactions to medications and report any issues to the Wellness Director or Executive Director without delay.

Communication Duties

  • Participate in all staff meetings and mandatory training sessions.
  • Effectively communicate residents' needs to caregiver staff during shift changes and report any changes in resident conditions to the Wellness Director or Executive Director.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation for resident care is completed and maintained accurately.

Reports To: Wellness Director, Executive Director, and Manager-on-Duty


Physical Requirements:

To meet job expectations, employees must be capable of performing essential physical tasks for extended periods. Employees should follow proper body mechanics and safety protocols when assisting or transferring residents. Typical physical demands include:

  • Standing or walking for up to eight hours daily; sitting for up to two hours.
  • Frequently supporting up to 70 pounds and occasionally lifting or carrying up to 15 pounds.
  • Regularly kneeling, bending, and reaching, securing assistance for resident transfers as necessary.
