Law Enforcement Trainee

Job Summary
This is a non-sworn, training level classification in the Sheriff's Office. The successful candidate will attend an approved Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) basic police academy for training. During the training, the recruit will not have police powers and will be subject to the rules and regulations of the Muskegon County Sheriff's Office and the academy attended. A promotion to a sworn Deputy Sheriff position is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy and meeting the minimum entrance qualifications for a Deputy Sheriff.
Required Minimum Entrance Qualifications
- Possession of a high school diploma or GED equivalent is necessary.
- No specific work experience is necessary.
- The candidate must be 20 years old at the time of appointment to Police Officer.
- The candidate must be a U.S. Citizen.
- A valid Michigan Driver's license and safe driving record are required.
Special Requirements
- The applicant must be a bona fide resident of the State of Michigan for one (1) year prior to the time of appointment.
- The applicant must be bondable.
- The applicant must be in good physical condition, including normal visual functions and acuity in each eye correctable to 20/20.
- The applicant must be willing to work varied shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- The applicant must have no felony convictions or disqualifying offenses as determined by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES).
- The applicant must have the ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation, which includes credit history, driving record, criminal activity, military and employment records, and character references in accordance with the minimum standards for employment issued by MCOLES.
Physical Conditions / Work Location
- The employee in this class must have the physical health, strength, and agility necessary to meet the physical demands of police work, as determined by a physical agility test and medical exam based on current MCOLES guidelines.
- The employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, extreme heat, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, explosives, bodily fluids, and other dangers associated with crime or accident scenes, and other extremely dangerous situations.
Additional Information
- The selected candidate must take a post-offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test given by a County-appointed physician before the first day of employment.
- An offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the medical examination and drug screening test.
- Applicants for County employment may be subject to a post-offer criminal background check, depending on the nature and assignment of the position.
- When such a check is conducted, an offer of employment is contingent upon the results of the criminal background check.
- Appointees must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment will be considered permanent.
