Job Summary:

The Director of Nursing Services will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the overall operations of the Nursing Services Department. This includes ensuring that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times, adhering to state, federal, and local guidelines and regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Supervise and oversee nursing practices, ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and adhere to a master staffing plan, preparing an on-call schedule to ensure continuous RN coverage.
  • Provide oversight to the Medical Records Department and Staffing Coordinator.
  • Coordinate nursing services with other resident care services, including Physical Therapy, Physician services, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Activities, Dietary, Social Services, and Pharmacy services.
  • Oversee the coordination of all physicians and their associates, reporting consistent problems to the Administrator and Medical Director.
  • Makes recommendations to the Administrator for the purchase of medical supplies and equipment to maintain and treat resident conditions.
  • Assume duties of the Administrator in their absence and lead daily morning meetings as required.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings for continuing education on policies governing supervision, leadership, and management, as well as policies related to resident care and treatment.
  • Attend in-service education and/or seminars necessary for continuing education in Long-Term Care and related regulations.
  • Ensure that the facility has a sound infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship tracking and monitoring program.
  • Understand Medicare Part A guidelines and standards, maintaining current records and ensuring required documentation for continued payment.
  • Participate in NYS Department of Health and Federal Surveys.
  • Report incidents to the NYS Department of Health in accordance with current regulations and requirements.
  • Be knowledgeable of Long-Term Care regulatory guidance, the PP State Operations Manual for Long Term Care, and other related regulatory bodies.
  • Responsible for the execution of resident care policies as directed by the Medical Director.
  • Conduct investigations of incidents that occur in the facility, including abuse, neglect, mistreatment, medication errors, equipment failures, and resident-to-resident incidents.
  • Responsible for the return or destruction of non-controlled and controlled substances per policy and regulations.
  • Provide adequate professional nurses and para-professional personnel in sufficient numbers and commensurate with the type and amount of nursing needs of individual residents.
  • Interview applicants seeking employment in the nursing department.
  • Responsible for nursing staff oversight and participation in the probationary and annual performance evaluation process, per-employment physical and annual health screening process, attendance records, license/registration and credentialing, employee accident records, and nurse schedules.
  • Ensure that the facility has a sound infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship tracking and monitoring program.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings for continuing education on policies governing supervision, leadership, and management, as well as policies related to resident care and treatment.
