Position Overview

The role of the Athletics and Community Engagement Coordinator is pivotal in establishing and sustaining a vibrant community sports initiative within The Salvation Army. This includes the management of athletic leagues and the exploration of external partnerships for facility rentals. Key responsibilities encompass outreach development, community league formation, coaching, and overseeing all gym activities. The coordinator will manage league schedules, handle registrations, maintain communication with participants, and foster relationships with local educational institutions and community organizations to ensure optimal gym utilization. A significant focus will be on recruiting and supervising volunteers and coaches. Additionally, this position involves collaboration with our corps and afterschool youth programs to allocate appropriate gym time for games. The coordinator will also serve as the Manager on Duty in the Gymnasium, overseeing sports and recreational programs, fulfilling closing duties, and ensuring the facility's cleanliness and safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and execute Sports & Recreation initiatives.
  • Oversee and enhance existing sports programs.
  • Manage daily operations and strategic planning for sports initiatives, including budgeting and child safety.
  • Formulate and coach teams; recruit, train, and supervise volunteers and coaches.
  • Establish consistent outreach programs to engage the community in sports.
  • Promote programs through various media channels to attract participants and volunteers.
  • Administer registration processes and manage fees for program participants.
  • Maintain comprehensive databases for all sports-related programs.
  • Collaborate with Corps Officers and program directors to integrate sports initiatives across The Salvation Army Davis Center.
  • Facilitate external rentals, ensuring compliance with necessary paperwork and contracts.
  • Adhere to The Salvation Army's policies and procedures.
  • Engage and recruit community volunteers to support sports leagues and initiatives.
  • Ensure the upkeep of gym facilities and equipment.
  • Support the overall mission and ministry of the corps.
Working Conditions

Ability to engage in physical activities such as walking, standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs. Proficiency in operating office equipment is required.

Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent; college degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in sports and recreation management.
  • Experience in budget development and administration is beneficial.
  • Familiarity with Salvation Army programs is advantageous.
  • Two years of experience working with children in a sports or recreational setting is required.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Professional demeanor and strong interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Knowledge of child development and educational philosophies is necessary.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification is required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish is preferred.
Skills and Abilities
