The Durham County Sheriff's Office is in search of certified Correctional Facility Officers who reflect the values and diversity of the Durham County community.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Process individuals into custody, conduct searches, manage personal belongings, facilitate communication with legal representatives or family members, and inform about institutional rules and regulations.
- Patrol designated areas to ensure safety and maintain order.
- Oversee inmates during meals, exercise, work, recreation, and related activities to ensure compliance with institutional rules and procedures.
- Address the special needs of inmates and work to resolve individual issues.
- Escort and transport inmates as necessary.
- Secure cell doors to prevent conflicts among inmates.
- Maintain routine records on inmates; perform general clerical tasks, and prepare court documentation.
- Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of living quarters and recreational equipment utilized by inmates.
- Coordinate visits, inspect items brought into the facility, and monitor incoming and outgoing correspondence.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Familiarity with Federal, State, and local laws governing detention operations.
- Understanding of forms, records, and reports utilized in the detention facility.
- Ability to remain in a standing or seated position for extended periods.
- Capability to maintain discipline and order among inmates.
- Ability to work within confined spaces.
- Skill in interacting firmly yet courteously with inmates and visitors.
- Sound judgment in both routine and emergency situations.
- Ability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues.
This role involves medium work, requiring walking, standing, stooping, lifting, pushing, and raising objects, with the ability to exert between 20 and 50 pounds of force regularly and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Must possess a current NC Detention Officer Certification and maintain good standing with the NC Sheriff Training and Standards Commission.
- Must hold a valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Must not have any felony or serious misdemeanor convictions.
- Must successfully complete a reading comprehension examination and a physical ability/readiness assessment.
- Must reside within a specified distance from downtown Durham or be willing to relocate upon employment.
