The Space Scientist (Senior Member of Technical Staff - Physics) role within PSL's Space Sciences Department concentrates on the ionosphere, thermosphere, and the broader space environment. This position also involves presenting scientific and application outcomes through direct engagement with clients and corporate leadership, participation in scientific conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.
Key Responsibilities
- Support a diverse range of critical space initiatives by applying findings from space science research and fostering interactions with a varied customer base.
- Collaborate with space system communities to document and comprehend the influence of space environment factors on operations, engage in anomaly investigations and performance assessments, and utilize established system evaluation methods to recommend material solutions.
- Lead and contribute to proposals for research funding from customer organizations and collaborate within the Corporation and with external entities to develop and implement innovative techniques for measuring, monitoring, and forecasting the impacts of the space environment on space systems.
- Conduct scientific investigations on ionospheric and thermospheric phenomena through data analysis and modeling to enhance our understanding of environmental influences on space system operations, and disseminate findings through customer briefings, reports, conferences, workshops, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Adapt duties, responsibilities, and activities as necessary to meet evolving needs.
- Utilize effective communication and presentation skills to convey complex technical issues clearly.
- Exhibit strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Work collaboratively within a team setting.
- Employ organizational, time management, and project management skills effectively.
Qualifications for Success
Minimum Requirements:
- PhD degree from an accredited institution in space science, physics, space physics, geophysics, engineering, or a closely related discipline (either pursuing or recently conferred).
- 0-1 year of relevant industry experience.
- Experience with scientific methodologies and data analysis.
- Familiarity with ionospheric and thermospheric processes and modeling.
- Proficiency in conducting research utilizing experimental techniques and data analysis is essential.
- Willingness to travel domestically and/or internationally to support client needs, approximately 10% as required.
- This position necessitates the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance issued by the U.S. government; U.S. citizenship is required for clearance eligibility.

Preferred Qualifications
It would be advantageous if you possess one or more of the following:
- A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at technical conferences or related publications.
- Experience in designing, constructing, testing, and deploying space science instrumentation.
- Experience in managing and analyzing various datasets of space physics measurements for fundamental research and application is desirable.
- Experience in fostering multi-organization collaborations and working with contractors and/or program offices is preferred.
- Current TS/SSBI (SCI) security clearance issued by the U.S. government is highly desirable.
