Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Instrument Technician EMG/EEG to join our team at the Birmingham VA Health Care System. As a key member of our Neurology Medicine Services team, you will be responsible for providing expert-level technical support for EMG and EEG testing procedures.

Responsibilities
  • Provide instrument maintenance, calibration, and determine appropriate settings for individual case studies.
  • Independently choose appropriate montages for patient recording along with making filter changes, wire changes, and electrode replacement necessary to achieve a technically satisfactory recording.
  • Adhere to responsibilities regarding ethics, confidentiality, and HIPAA compliance.
  • Maintain appropriate interpersonal skills with patients, physician staff, and other hospital/clinic staff.
  • Explain the test procedure to the patient to obtain the patient's cooperation necessary for a complete examination.
  • Check the patient's electronic medical record for orders and special needs, with attention to patients with pacemakers, defibrillators, and neurotransmitters.
  • Assist the EDX physician with the EDX studies as needed by preparing or manipulating the instrument and applying surface recording electrodes.
  • Perform procedures on both common and uncommon nerves to aid the EDX physician in the best studies to expose abnormalities.
  • Follow facility policies and procedures regarding critical test results.
  • Troubleshoot machine problems and ensure testing of machine electrical leakage.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and machine maintenance.
Requirements
  • United States Citizenship
  • Education: No specific educational requirements
  • Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications desirable
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand on feet for long periods, physically dexterous for electrode application, and have sufficient physical strength to assist in patient positioning and movement of portable equipment
  • English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English
