The Pharmacy Student evaluates prescribed medications for their appropriateness regarding dosage, therapeutic effectiveness, potential allergies, drug interactions, and contraindications. Accurate and comprehensive documentation of all medication-related activities is maintained to ensure proper medication distribution. All responsibilities are performed under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.
Key Responsibilities
Contributes to the achievement of departmental goals and adheres to established policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety regulations under direct supervision.Assists in the preparation of necessary reports by gathering relevant information.Supports the troubleshooting and maintenance of the automated drug distribution system, serving as a resource for nursing and pharmacy technicians.Assists pharmacists in processing orders and preparing IV medications.Regularly checks inventory to ensure compliance with FDA regulations.Participates in training pharmacy technicians and other staff to facilitate the medication distribution process.Under supervision, provides guidance to patients, families, and healthcare professionals regarding medication usage, including dosage, side effects, and formulation.Under supervision, compounds, labels, and packages medications.Ensures secure storage of controlled substances under supervision.Prepares concise clinical briefs for nursing and medical staff under supervision.Upon demonstrating competency, consults with medical staff regarding drug utilization and therapy.Upon demonstrating competency, collaborates with unit-based staff concerning prescriptions, orders, and medication-related issues.Upon demonstrating competency, monitors drug therapy for appropriateness and suggests adjustments when necessary.Engages in meetings and committees, representing the department in community outreach initiatives.Participates in multidisciplinary quality improvement teams.Performs additional duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Currently enrolled in a Pharm.D. program from an ACPE accredited pharmacy school.
Experience
- Less than 1 year and 6 months of experience in a hospital environment.
Licenses and Certifications
- Certification from a national pharmacy technician program is required.
- Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Maryland or eligible for a pharmacy student exemption from registration.
Skills and Competencies
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer proficiency is preferred.
