The West County Transportation Agency is seeking a highly skilled Heavy Duty School Bus Mechanic to join their team. As a key member of the Vehicle Maintenance department, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing school buses and other automotive equipment.

Company Overview

The West County Transportation Agency is a Joint Powers Agency formed of seventeen school districts in Western Sonoma County. Our primary responsibility is to provide cooperative, centralized, cost-efficient, safe, and child-centered school transportation to the students of these school districts.

Salary

The starting salary for this position is $28.15 per hour, with excellent health, dental, and vision benefits for the employee and dependents, including a $50,000 life insurance policy. You will also receive paid vacation time, accumulated sick leave, and a CalPERS retirement package.

Job Description

As a Heavy Duty School Bus Mechanic, your duties will include performing complex mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of school buses and other automotive equipment. This will involve repairing and replacing clutches, brakes, cylinder linings, connecting rods, bearings, rings, crankshafts, and other engine parts. You will also adjust carburetors and tune engines, set rack, and overhaul transmissions and differentials.

You will perform electrical troubleshooting and repairs, as well as repair and replace starters, generators, distributors, relays, and other automotive electrical equipment. Additionally, you will maintain and install smog devices on gas and diesel vehicles, repair and replace axles, radiators, hoses, fuel, and water pumps, and tires.

You will perform various welding tasks, repair and replace bus seats, windows, and windshields as necessary, request repair parts as needed, and make emergency repairs to equipment in the field. You will also maintain records of repair and maintenance work, follow generally accepted preventive maintenance procedures for school buses in the State of California, and drive a school bus over regular routes or on special trips as requested if properly licensed.

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need one year of journey-level experience as a mechanic in the overall repair of heavy and light automotive and other power-driven equipment. You must hold and be willing to maintain a Class B license, and have a high school graduation or G.E.D. You should also have knowledge of tools, equipment, and procedures used in the overhaul and repair and adjustment of a variety of buses and other automotive equipment.

Physical Demands of the Position

This role requires standing, walking, waist bending, neck bending, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, pushing/pulling, reaching above shoulder, below shoulder, and full extension, as well as lifting weights up to 100 pounds. You will also engage in repetitive hand use, simple grasping, power grasping, fine manipulation, hand/arm twisting/turning, and computer operation/writing.
