Job Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a highly skilled Registered Nurse - Patient Safety Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our Quality and Patient Safety area, you will play a critical role in coordinating and implementing patient safety policies and activities developed by the National Center for Patient Safety (NCPS).

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain, and operate the VHA's patient safety processes.
  • Collaborate, train, and direct patient safety activities of personnel.
  • Translate policies, theories, and strategies into action.
  • Train and implement patient safety and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process to clinicians, management, and all relevant support personnel.
  • Maintain clear communication between the facility and the NCPS.
  • Apply specialized principles and practices of health management in directing or supporting a health care delivery system.
  • Ensure actions contribute to a mode of continued accreditation readiness regarding Joint Commission (JC), Office of Inspector General (OIG), Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), VA surveyors, Laboratory College of American Pathologists (CAP), and other respective survey teams.
Requirements
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
  • Experience in patient safety, quality management, or clinical risk management vs claim focus risk management.
  • Background and working knowledge of health care delivery and patient safety/quality management/quality improvement principles.
  • Experience in standards and methods of documentation of patient care; standards and methods of evaluation of patient care; medical record analysis for appropriateness of safe care; and data extraction, evaluation, and reporting techniques.
  • Experience with patient safety programs and processes including root cause analysis, incident reporting, etc.
  • Experience with managing accreditation compliance of programs related to The Joint Commission (TJC) and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree or higher.
  • Three (3) years of experience in professional nursing practice.
  • Two (2) years of experience in patient safety, quality management, or clinical risk management vs claim focus risk management.
Working Conditions

This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position may require potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations and able to shift priorities based on patient needs.
