Position Overview:

The Inland Waterway Pilot serves as the primary or secondary officer aboard the tug and barge, ensuring the safe navigation and operation of the vessel. This role requires a thorough understanding of maritime commands and the ability to take charge in the captain's absence. Key responsibilities include managing the safe connection and disconnection of tows, navigating through locks and bridges, and maintaining the vessel's overall cleanliness and functionality.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Alternates wheelhouse watch duties with the captain.
  • Ensures the safety of the vessel and oversees all operational equipment and inspections.
  • Keeps navigation charts and publications up to date.
  • Teaches deckhands essential seamanship skills.
  • Assists the captain during barge landings, providing clear and precise distance and directional communication.
  • Evaluates the necessity for lookouts and assigns them as needed.
  • Conducts inspections to maintain vessel cleanliness.
  • Manages inventory of supplies and places orders as necessary.
  • Monitors onboard supply usage for efficiency.
  • Provides assistance on deck when required.

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid Master of Inland Towing license with Western Rivers and Radar Observer endorsement.
  • Experience navigating the Port Allen Route and areas south of Baton Rouge.
  • Proficient in reading, speaking, and understanding English for effective communication over radio and telephone.
  • Completion of Coast Guard-approved firefighting training.
  • Valid first aid certification is required.
  • CPR training certification is mandatory.
  • Ability to instruct deckhands on the operation of all tools and machinery on board.
  • Effective communication skills to direct crew members and ensure task completion.
  • Capability to train and evaluate assigned crew members fairly.
  • Understanding of cargo information cards and material safety data sheets.
  • Completion of HAZWOPER training within the first month of employment.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to work in confined spaces and maintain positive relationships with crew members over extended periods.
  • Physical fitness to perform tasks such as pulling heavy lines, lifting, climbing, and bending during vessel operations.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions including rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, and rough seas.
  • Comfortable working at heights.

Work Schedule:

  • Flexibility to adapt to varying schedules and hours.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and night shifts, including on-call duties.
