Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Software Engineer to join our team at Los Alamos National Laboratory. As a Software Engineer, you will play a critical role in developing new software solutions, enhancing software performance, and supporting program functionality.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze and solve problems associated with software, hardware, applications, operating systems, and other aspects of a modern production controls system environment.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with scientists and engineers to maintain, support, and improve software systems critical to the safe and reliable operation of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) accelerator complex.
  • Participate in the development of software solutions using compiled languages such as C, C++, and/or Java, as well as scripting languages such as bash, Python, Tcl/Tk, and/or Perl.
  • Collaborate with the team to design and implement software solutions, and to troubleshoot and debug software tools and techniques.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
  • Experience working as a member of a project team, with excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain technical documentation, and to analyze and solve problems associated with software, hardware, applications, operating systems, and other aspects of a modern production controls system environment.
  • Programming experience with compiled languages such as C, C++, and/or Java, as well as scripting languages such as bash, Python, Tcl/Tk, and/or Perl.
  • Experience using and developing software in Linux systems, with knowledge of software build processes, makefiles, and software revision control.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Programming experience with LabVIEW, experience developing software for embedded systems, and experience and knowledge with virtualization, hypervisors, and/or containerization.
  • Linux system administration experience, programming experience with VxWorks or RTEMS, and experience in managing and monitoring Linux networks using standard tools.
  • Experience in developing and managing websites, static/dynamic web content, and relational database back-end services, and knowledge of instrumentation and control systems.
  • Experience with EPICS (the Experimental Physics Industrial Control System), research experience at a university or national lab, or equivalent experience directly related to the occupation.
