Job Summary

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Instructional Assistant to join our team at Hawthorne School District. As a key member of our instructional support staff, you will play a vital role in providing individualized support to students with special needs, helping them to reach their full potential and achieve academic success.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and conduct instructional exercises to support students with special needs.
  • Provide individualized support to students with special needs, reinforcing and following up on learning activities to ensure understanding and progress.
  • Monitor and assist students with special needs in drill, practice, and study activities, providing guidance and support as needed.
  • Direct students into safe learning and play activities, promoting social skills and positive behaviors.
  • Assist in the management of students exhibiting challenging behaviors, using positive reinforcement strategies and other appropriate techniques.
  • Prepare instructional materials and learning aids tailored to the needs of students with special needs.
  • Maintain accurate records, including confidential student records and medical information.
  • Operate and assist students with mobility equipment, instructional aids, and media, promoting independence and accessibility.
  • Monitor and assist in the remediation of specific learning problems and conditions, providing targeted support and interventions.
  • Assist with medical procedures, including tube feedings, catheter support, and suctioning, under the guidance of credentialed school registered nurses or other authorized individuals.
  • Perform routine first aid, including aiding students with seizures or respiratory disorders.
  • Observe and monitor students with physical handicapping conditions, requesting assistance as needed to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment, promoting social skills and emotional well-being.
  • Assist with toileting, including cleaning and changing students, and supporting toileting goals.
  • Provide skill-building activities for students with language and hearing disorders, promoting communication and social skills.
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Knowledge of child growth and development, particularly for students with special needs.
  • Understanding of behavior management strategies and techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Basic arithmetic concepts and record-keeping skills.
Working Conditions

This position requires:

  • 50-75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects.
  • Sitting most of the time, with occasional walking or standing.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, and manual dexterity to operate equipment and handle materials.
Education and Experience

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, and must meet one of the following requirements:

a) have obtained an Associate's (or higher) Degree, or

b) have completed at least 2 years (48 semester units) of study at an institution of higher education.

c) have met a rigorous standard of quality that demonstrates, through a formal academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and math.
