Job Responsibilities:

The Energy Systems Technician is responsible for ensuring optimal heating and cooling conditions, maintaining appropriate pressure levels and flow rates within the chilled water and steam energy systems to facilitate the effective functioning of building infrastructures.

This role involves overseeing the functionality of various plant machinery, including chillers, fans, pumps, motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and managing issues related to water supply, deaerators, boilers, and generators.

Compliance with safety protocols, including lock-out/tagout procedures, is essential, as is collaboration with maintenance personnel to restore equipment during both planned and unplanned outages. Effective communication with operational and maintenance supervisors is critical when plant operations deviate from established service quality benchmarks.

Regular inspections are conducted to verify that all machinery and controls are functioning correctly and are well-maintained. The technician is responsible for recording routine operational metrics and maintaining accurate production and consumption logs. Information pertinent to shift transitions must be documented and communicated effectively. Any equipment defects should be reported, and suggestions for enhancements or repairs should be made to the Operations Supervisor. Detailed records of any operational issues must be maintained in the plant log.

In the event of operational challenges, the technician must initiate emergency protocols as necessary. Adherence to safety regulations is paramount.

Identifying the nature of issues and taking appropriate measures to ensure safety while minimizing damage to property or equipment is a key responsibility.

The technician will also address concerns related to other utility systems on campus, including distributed steam and chilled water, potable water, reclaimed water, and electrical services.

Continuous communication during assigned shifts is maintained through radio or mobile phone contact with on-duty and emergency personnel.

The technician is expected to uphold cleanliness and organization within the plant. Coordination with other utility or energy providers or departments may be required. Support for the Operations Supervisor and Plant Superintendent is also part of the role.

Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.

Normal Work Schedule
40 hours per week in 10-hour shifts.

2PM-12AM Wednesday-Saturday. Flexibility to cover understaffed positions may be required.

On-call or relief shifts during weekends or evenings may be scheduled.

This position is classified as Essential Personnel.

Expected Salary:
Starting salary is $17.85, with potential for increase based on experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with one year of relevant experience. Vocational or technical training may substitute for experience at an equivalent rate. A valid driver's license and acceptable driving record are necessary.

EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification must be obtained within six months of hire.

Proficiency in using hand tools is essential.

Ability to manage work assignments and communicate effectively is required.

Professional representation of the Utilities and Energy Department to other entities is expected.

Capability to follow directions and complete tasks with minimal supervision is necessary.

Willingness to work on-call during off-hours and weekends is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
2+ years of experience in monitoring and troubleshooting utility plants.

Knowledge of operational procedures and maintenance methods for boilers and chilled water systems, with proven experience supporting plant operations.


Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems is advantageous.

Boiler operator certification is preferred.

Intermediate proficiency in MS Office is beneficial.
