Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Correctional Officer - Security Specialist to join our team at the Iowa Department of Administrative Services. As a Correctional Officer - Security Specialist, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of our facilities, staff, and inmates.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patrol facilities and make security checks to identify and address potential safety and security risks.
- Inspect all areas of the institution for safety and security deficiencies and take corrective action as necessary.
- Search individuals, vehicles, packages, mail, equipment, clothing, and offender quarters for contraband items.
- Escort offenders, visitors, and staff inside and outside of the institution and verify possession of appropriate passes or legal documents.
- Verify offender population in assigned areas at regular and irregular intervals and participate in offender counts.
- Interact with the general public, visitors, and victims in person or via phone, providing information, security, and assistance as needed.
- Observe offender behavior and interaction with staff, other offenders, and visitors, and communicate observations to supervisory and program staff to ensure effective security and consistent application of offender change principles.
- Continuously interact with offenders, assisting in the development of problem-solving skills, providing positive reinforcement when appropriate, and instituting corrective measures when necessary and as authorized by law and policy.
- Instruct offenders in policy, procedure, expectations, and assist offenders in the development of attitudes and skills necessary for successful adaptation to life within an institution.
- Role model pro-social attitudes and behaviors that convey respect for others and the acknowledgement that offenders can change their lives by development of skills and the adoption of pro-social attitudes and behaviors.
- Maintain logs, prepare reports, and enter information into the DOC electronic offender record system.
- Supervise offender work assignments and evaluate work performance.
- Operate electronic doors, telephone systems, two-way radios, intercom, alarm systems, closed-circuit TV systems, and computer terminals, and use weapons and offender control devices as necessary.
- Attend training classes and seminars, and may train or serve as team leader for other staff.
Requirements:
- Graduation from high school, GED, or equivalency.
- Ability to successfully pass psychological tests, background investigation checks, post-offer health screens, urinalysis screens for drugs, and all new employee training during the probationary period.
- Designated positions in this job class require applicants to obtain a Commercial Driver's License and endorsements within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority at the time of hire.
