Forensic Investigator

Join the City of New York as an Identification Investigator and contribute to the protection of public health and the pursuit of justice through forensic science and medicine.
Job Summary:The Identification Investigator will be responsible for reviewing identifications for quality assurance purposes, managing daily case lists, and investigating missing person inquiries. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in criminalistics, forensic science, or a related field, and excellent analytical and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:- Review identifications for quality assurance purposes, particularly those based on scientific modalities such as DNA and fingerprints.
- Manage daily case lists to ensure timely completion of scientific analyses.
- Investigate missing person inquiries and assist families and Medical Examiners with the decedent identification process.
- Perform and administer difficult analytic work in the preparation and distribution of complex reports.
- Supervise lower-level staff and perform other investigative duties as assigned.
- Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in a relevant field such as criminalistics, forensic science, chemistry, biology, or physics.
- At least one year of satisfactory full-time experience in criminalistics, forensic science, or analytic chemistry, or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience.
The Identification Investigator will be assigned to one of four levels based on their experience and qualifications:
- Assignment Level I-B: Requires a baccalaureate degree and at least one year of experience in criminalistics or forensic science.
- Assignment Level II: Requires one year of experience as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B or two years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science.
- Assignment Level III: Requires two years of experience as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B and/or II or three years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science.
- Assignment Level IV: Requires three years of experience as a Criminalist at Assignment Level I-B, II, and/or III or four years of qualifying experience in criminalistics or forensic science.
