Job Summary:

The Medical/Surgeon Nurse, in collaboration with physicians and M/S nursing staff, oversees, coordinates and manages care for all patients on Medical/Surgeon. They are responsible for assuring the continuity of care for Medical/Surgeon patients, implementing all disease management protocols as appropriate, and developing interdisciplinary plans of care.

Key Responsibilities:

• Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care.
• Perform focused interviews to identify specific patient needs.
• Assess signs and symptoms indicating physiologic and psychosocial changes in the patient's condition.
• Collect, analyze, and interpret data and information from healthcare members and document actual and/or potential nursing diagnoses.
• Document the patient's plan of care using identified nursing diagnoses, expected patient outcomes, and selected nursing interventions.
• Identify and prioritize actions based upon patient care requirements.
• Monitor consistency between patient plan of care and actions of medical staff.
• Perform interventions according to identified priorities, plan of care, and hospital policies and patient care outcome standards.
• Provide a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic patient environment.
• Initiate and evaluate patient and/or family education.
• Revises the plan of care according to evaluation, changes in medical plan of care, and effective/ineffective nursing interventions.
• Document patient's response to nursing and other interventions.
• Use clinical judgment in evaluation activities to meet patient care needs of an assigned unit/floor including establishing priorities.
• Monitor the safety and effectiveness of the environment and equipment.
• Participate in activities to facilitate good interpersonal communications with the chosen facility.

Requirements:

• At least one year Medical/Surgical experience.
• Associate's degree from an accredited school of nursing. BSN degree preferred.
• Current D.C. licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• BLS and ACLS.
• Evidence successful basic 12 lead EKG Interpretation class or successful completion of class within 90 days of hire
