Step Increases
Child Welfare Coordinators are eligible for incremental pay increases as follows:

Upon successful completion of the Arizona Department of Child Safety's 22-week CORE training program $22.59/hour
One year of service as a Child Welfare Coordinator $24.11/hour
Two years of service as a Child Welfare Coordinator $25.96/hour
Three years of service as a Child Welfare Coordinator $27.66/hour

WHAT DOES A CHILD WELFARE COORDINATOR DO?

A Child Welfare Coordinator provides essential support and guidance to children and families in need. This position demands strong organizational skills and critical thinking abilities. The Coordinator evaluates child safety and risk while collaborating with families, agencies, and the judicial system for effective case management. This role operates in a dynamic environment, requiring a high level of expertise and precision in maintaining quality and accuracy in all tasks. The primary responsibilities of a DCS Coordinator include, but are not limited to:

Responding to reported concerns of child abuse and/or neglect Evaluating child safety and associated risks Conducting interviews and gathering pertinent information Engaging with families and children in various settings Participating in court proceedings Developing case plans and facilitating case plan discussions Preparing professional reports and completing necessary documentation Coordinating and overseeing service delivery Assisting with the placement and transportation of children when required Managing cases within the designated county and area Utilizing computer systems and the Department's Child Welfare Software Programs

Flexibility in work hours may be necessary, including potential overtime, weekends, and holidays.

WHAT KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES WOULD BE HELPFUL?

Knowledge of:
Confidentiality principles; behavior modification techniques; conflict resolution and counseling methods; intervention strategies; interviewing techniques; child development; family systems; family-centered practices; indicators of mental health disturbances; effects of abuse and neglect; separation and loss issues; and child welfare practices. Proficiency in computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite); mobile devices; digital calendars (Outlook) & video conferencing (Microsoft Teams).

Skill in:
Building and maintaining interpersonal relationships; effective verbal and written communication; gathering and analyzing information; modeling professional conduct with clients; managing time and multitasking; keen observational skills; sensitivity to diverse needs and cultures; handling high-stress situations calmly and effectively; adaptability; and making independent decisions.

Ability to:
Complete tasks thoroughly; take initiative and responsibility; analyze information logically to address work-related challenges; recognize and address substance abuse issues in individuals and families and develop appropriate intervention strategies; prepare detailed documentation of client interactions to ensure accurate records; and enter, retrieve, and correct data in a computerized system; and obtain and maintain CPR Certification.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A CHILD WELFARE COORDINATOR?

Bachelor's or Master's Degree from an accredited institution—transcripts must be provided to verify degree, OR four (4) years of experience as a DCS Case Aide.

Department of Public Safety Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card

Any employee operating a vehicle for State business must possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license, complete all required training, and successfully pass all necessary driver's license record checks. The license must be current, unexpired, and not revoked or suspended. Employees who drive for state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records, and must complete all required driver training. An employee who uses a personal vehicle for state business must maintain the required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R

During the initial 22 weeks of employment, in-person training in Midtown Phoenix will be required, involving overnight stays as necessary, every other week.

Selected candidates must successfully pass a written examination, background investigation, Motor Vehicle Report check, and DCS Central Registry check.

If this position requires driving or the use of a vehicle as an essential function of the job to conduct State business, then the following requirements apply: Driver's License Requirements.

Bi-Lingual Stipend
In an effort to better serve our communities, DCS offers a Bi-Lingual Stipend to all interested and eligible DCS Employees who successfully complete a language proficiency exam. Qualifying employees will receive a $500 annual stipend paid in equal increments.
