POSITION SUMMARY
As part of the Operations Control Support team, the CPM (Computational Pipeline Modeling)/Leak Detection Engineer plays a vital role in ONEOK's dedication to safe and efficient operations by overseeing advanced computer-based transient model leak detection and CPM systems for liquid petroleum pipelines. The CPM Engineer offers real-time assistance to Operations Control, manages and enhances the CPM Systems, and assesses potential improvements. This position demands the ability to juggle multiple projects with differing timelines while also providing operational support.

CPM Engineers utilize core engineering principles and expertise to enhance operational safety, address real-time challenges, minimize operational disruptions, and boost efficiency. They are expected to comprehend intricate issues, devise solutions, and communicate findings to decision-makers or independently make decisions.

A successful candidate will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Project Managers, Controls Technology Engineers, fellow CPM Engineers, Controllers, and SCADA Analysts, to drive project completion. This role may involve managing several engineering projects with conflicting priorities and occasionally necessitate meeting stringent project deadlines.
Job Profile Overview
Oversees and implements cutting-edge computer-based transient model leak detection and computational pipeline monitoring (CPM) systems for liquid petroleum pipelines. Provides immediate support to Operations Control, maintains and updates the CPM Systems, and evaluates and implements system enhancements. Applies fundamental engineering principles to bolster operational safety, resolve real-time issues, mitigate operational disturbances, and enhance efficiency. Develops specifications and recommendations for process control applications. Offers support for urgent diagnostic responses to critical system failures. Collaborates with diverse teams, including Project Managers, Controls Technology Engineers, other CPM Systems Analysts, Controllers, and SCADA Analysts, to fulfill project objectives. Manages multiple engineering projects with competing priorities and occasionally meets tight project deliverable timelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Applications Support & Development
    • Analyzes, develops, implements, and maintains computational pipeline monitoring (CPM), leak detection systems, and pipeline simulation systems to align with business requirements, regulatory standards, and company protocols.
    • Employs physics, engineering, and computational fluid dynamics principles to conduct pipeline profile analyses and assessments.
    • Provides leak detection application support, development, and testing for a wide array of issues and CPM designs.
    • Delivers 24/7 control room support, including participation in the on-call support rotation.
    • Engages with controllers to clarify hydraulic concepts in practical terms.
    • Collaborates with software vendors to sustain leak detection and simulation models, including upgrades and periodic re-certification testing.
    • Works with internal stakeholders to identify business needs for application development and maintenance.
    • Acts as project manager for enhancement and maintenance initiatives, supporting both internal and external stakeholders.
    • Collaborates with stakeholders to pinpoint system or operational enhancements, develop solutions, and implement changes to reduce operational costs and enhance reliability and efficiency.
    • Coordinates with project managers and engineers to ensure future projects include necessary equipment and instrumentation for effective leak detection.
    • Participates in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of vendor applications, including design and development for required system interfaces.
    • Recommends hardware and software solutions.
    • Assesses systems architecture and new leak detection technologies, proposes CPM systems, and formulates integration plans into the leak detection application environment.
    • Analyzes SCADA and leak detection system data to identify key performance indicators (KPI) for alarm parameters and evaluate SCADA system performance.
    • Develops and implements custom applications using Python, VBA, DOS batch files, and/or PowerShell.
    • Maintains and updates technical practices related to leak detection and pipeline hydraulics.
  • Data & Reporting
    • Conducts periodic monitoring of all leak detection system alarms.
    • Reviews and interprets CPM data.
    • Prepares reports concerning CPM systems alarms data.
    • Reviews and updates manual overrides to CPM systems.
  • Incident Investigations
    • Troubleshoots and resolves abnormal operating conditions related to leak detection.
    • Participates in incident investigations involving CPM and/or other leak detection systems data through data analysis and interpretation.
    • Implements action items resulting from investigations involving CPM and other leak detection systems model modifications, configurations, processes, and procedures.
  • Training
    • Gains knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to pipeline CPM systems.
    • Establishes instructional goals and objectives for the proper use of CPM model-based leak detection systems applications.
    • Designs and develops training materials and documentation.
  • Hydraulic Modeling
    • Utilizes physics, engineering, and computational fluid dynamics principles to perform complex pipeline profile analyses for hydraulic modeling of pipeline leak signatures.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Computer Science is required.
Work Experience
  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience.
  • Proficiency in Python, JAVA, PowerShell.
  • Familiarity with hydraulics, leak detection technologies, statistical analysis, measurement/instrumentation, and/or SCADA.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of pipelines or hydrocarbon processing and related facilities design, construction, operation, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of material failure and structural analysis, as well as industry standards and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to read and interpret governmental regulations, blueprints, contracts, manuals, specifications, surveys, charts, load studies, and other relevant documents.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve engineering design and calculation issues with supervisor assistance as needed.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to recommend and implement new initiatives and complete projects.
  • Ability to apply mathematical, algebraic formulas, and statistical methods.
  • Ability to interact, negotiate, and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to operate necessary office tools and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate information clearly and logically, including technical material.
