Patient Care Technician I

Overview:
Delivers fundamental patient support in accordance with the competencies and skill standards established by the N.C. Division of Facility Services and the North Carolina Board of Nursing, Nurse Aide Central Registry.
Administers patient care under the guidance of the nursing staff, documenting observations and actions within the scope of practice in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
May have access to non-controlled medication storage areas when job responsibilities necessitate such access, including transferring non-controlled medications between storage locations or assisting licensed healthcare professionals in retrieving these medications.
Responsibilities:
Provides direct patient care tailored to the requests and needs of patients and their families, ensuring age-appropriate interactions.
Offers personal assistance to patients that fosters recovery by aiding with daily living activities:
bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, skin care, and mobility support. Accurately measures vital signs and documents them promptly. Reports any findings that deviate from normal ranges to the nursing staff for timely intervention.
Maintains ongoing communication with licensed personnel regarding all responsibilities, ensuring immediate notification in case of any issues or potential concerns.
Addresses patient quality of life factors related to nutrition, hydration, and elimination by:Assisting with meal preparation and feeding as necessary, distributing nutritional supplements and snacks according to the care plan, accurately monitoring and documenting intake and output, and alerting nursing staff to significant observations (e.g., lack of bowel movement, diarrhea, concentrated urine). Empties foley catheters at the end of shifts and as required. Conducts intentional hourly rounding to anticipate patient needs. Responds to the needs of all patients on the unit, not just those assigned.
Facilitates admissions, transfers, and discharges to enhance patient flow. Receives and acts upon nurse delegation. Collaborates with nursing staff to prioritize multiple requests.
Encourages a positive and efficient departmental environment. Enhances patient satisfaction through personal engagement, addressing patient needs promptly. (Patient rounding as appropriate). Ensures a clean and comfortable setting for patients. Assists with locating lost or misplaced patient belongings. Reports patient status, family concerns, or unsafe conditions as they arise. Responds to call lights, intercoms, and telephones. Directs inquiries and issues to the appropriate personnel, recognizing when to seek assistance. Provides support to patients and their families. Aids with bed assignments, transfers, and discharges. Monitors patient activities both on and off the unit. Collects non-controlled medications and distributes them to the appropriate licensed staff on the unit. Observes video surveillance systems. Communicates about equipment maintenance and repairs. Assists in maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Demonstrates personal accountability. Responds appropriately to emergency situations (Cone Health Codes) and shows knowledge of emergency response protocols. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals (including compliance with Infection Prevention, Hand Hygiene, etc.).
Always employs appropriate safety devices and techniques (examples:
using safe lifting equipment and needle safety devices; pushing carts; correctly lifting copy paper). Safeguards all confidential information and complies with HIPAA regulations. Follows all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, including dress code and attendance. Accurately documents time using Kronos. Completes all required departmental education, competencies, and/or proficiencies.
Performs clerical tasks as needed. May assist in scheduling follow-up appointments for patients. Enters charges and maintains accurate accommodation codes. Helps ensure compliance with regulatory standards; Refrigerator temperatures, tracking device day data, daily BCA checks, safety rounds, and appropriate audits.
Ensures fall risk patients have the correct armbands and sock colors, as well as appropriate signage, and monitors bed alarm compliance.
Maintains proper documentation concerning patient information (Patient logs, Patient Labels, Transfer/Admission logs) and communication with physician practices. Maintains adequate inventory levels for all supplies and items necessary for departmental operations. Assists in managing unit inventory of supplies, equipment, nourishment, instruments, and office supplies. Requests supplies from portable equipment as needed.Qualifications:
