Job Overview

Under the guidance of the Faculty Director of the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC), the Taxpayer Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal representation, which encompasses administrative disputes with the IRS, litigation in Tax Court and Federal courts, and educational outreach for LITC clients. This role involves delivering legal services to clients while collaborating with clinic faculty, paralegals, staff, and students.

The Taxpayer Legal Counsel will also participate in outreach initiatives and client development efforts, as well as engage in taxpayer education aimed at underserved communities.

Required Qualifications
Juris Doctorate degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant legal experience.

Must be a member in good standing of the South Carolina bar and eligible for admission to practice before the U.S. Tax Court.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with at least three years of practical experience and a strong background in tax law, enabling them to effectively manage the substantive and procedural aspects of client representation in disputes with the IRS. A demonstrated commitment to institutional or public service is also desirable, with expectations for involvement in relevant extracurricular activities.

Skills and Abilities
Exceptional writing and verbal communication skills.
Extensive legal experience in tax controversy and related fields.
Ability to collaborate effectively with law school faculty, staff, and students.
Capacity to assist taxpayers in need of clinical support.
