With a diverse portfolio of over 23 dining establishments and specialized catering services, our team of around 600 skilled professionals impacts the lives of countless students, staff, and visitors daily.
Position Overview:
Yale is in search of a Vice President (VP) for Hospitality.
Our mission is to cultivate a welcoming environment where the joys of sharing meals, enriching minds, and fostering community connections are integral to every guest's experience.
We operate independently with more than 23 dining venues, alongside dedicated catering services. Our workforce comprises both union and non-union members, totaling approximately 600, in addition to our casual and on-call staff.This exceptional team of culinary, service, management, and administrative professionals significantly influences the experiences of students, employees, and visitors, serving an average of 15,000 meals daily and coordinating around 2,000 events each year.
Reporting to the Vice President of Campus Services, the VP for Hospitality is tasked with overseeing all aspects of hospitality services across the university, ensuring positive experiences for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The VP is also responsible for nurturing positive relationships with leaders and key stakeholders from various sectors within the institution. This includes academic leaders, operational heads, student representatives, union representatives, and alumni associations. Understanding the evolving preferences and demands of these diverse groups is crucial, particularly for the approximately 6,500 undergraduate students residing in 14 residential colleges.
We seek a dynamic leader who can guide and support this multifaceted operation to meet the organization's changing needs.
This leader will exemplify effective communication and foster a positive workplace culture that encourages collaboration, innovation, and growth.
As both a visionary and change agent, this role will spearhead initiatives to adapt and respond effectively to campus planning, market dynamics, technological advancements, and organizational growth.
The VP will oversee a comprehensive operating budget of $80 million, focusing on optimizing revenue streams and ensuring cost-effective operations while maintaining high service standards.
Strategic Leadership:
Develop and implement strategic initiatives that align with the university's mission, values, and priorities. Promote innovation and sustainability within hospitality operations.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Collaborate with university stakeholders, including academic departments, student organizations, and administrative units, to identify and fulfill their hospitality needs.
Financial Management:
Develop and manage annual budgets, optimize revenue streams, and ensure cost-effective operations.
Operations Leadership:
Provide leadership and direction for hospitality services, including 14 residential dining halls, 11 retail and dining locations, catering services, and culinary support.
Risk Management:
Implement effective risk management strategies to protect the university's reputation, assets, and stakeholders.
Maintain robust internal controls to ensure effective resource utilization, accurate financial reporting, and compliance with contractual obligations, policies, procedures, and health and safety standards.
Talent Management:
Oversee overall staff management, including recruitment, labor relations, skill development, evaluation, and resource allocation. Foster a culture of trust, teamwork, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.
External Partnerships:
Build and maintain relationships with external vendors, partners, and industry peers to enhance hospitality offerings and explore new opportunities.
Essential Duties:
Direct one or more functional areas within the administrative department and ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
Direct analytic and research support for educational policies and planning and develop and approve administrative policies affecting assigned functional areas.
3.Establish parameters for major projects within the department and university.
4.Interpret federal policies and regulations and educate staff and administration about these regulations and the university's legal responsibilities.
5.Implement policy and program modifications and develop standards to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
6.Administer an operating budget for the assigned department consistent with university policies.
7.Develop cost-saving objectives and goals; authorize major purchases and negotiate contracts.
8.Establish and implement long- and short-range goals for the functional area in line with university objectives.
9.Direct the development of automated systems to support departmental functions; determine office policies for system use.
10.Evaluate and select vendors and negotiate contract details on behalf of the assigned functional area.
11.Collaborate with internal and external contacts to resolve routine and complex issues.
12.Represent the university in discussions and negotiations with governmental agencies.
13.Oversee a team of exempt and non-exempt employees.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's Degree in a related field and ten years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Familiarity with the complexities of operating in a unionized environment.
Demonstrated experience managing a multi-location hospitality operation.
Ability to motivate and inspire a hospitality team to deliver exceptional customer service.
Proficiency in developing, managing, and reporting on a large budget with a consistent focus on profit and loss management.
