Position Overview

The American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is seeking a dedicated professional to support the Managing Director of Government Affairs in the development and execution of federal advocacy initiatives. This role is pivotal in representing ASLA's interests to Congress, federal agencies, and various coalitions.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct thorough research and monitor federal legislative and regulatory developments related to water infrastructure, green solutions, and national parks.
  • Build and sustain relationships with congressional members, committees, and executive branch officials relevant to assigned topics.
  • Draft legislative proposals, testimonies, and amendments, collaborating with partners to promote and advance these initiatives in Congress.
  • Prepare and submit comments on proposed regulations and administrative actions pertinent to designated issue areas.
  • Foster partnerships with coalitions and allied organizations within the design and construction sectors.
  • Coordinate grassroots communication efforts on federal legislative matters through established advocacy networks.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of ASLA's federal advocacy day program.
  • Collaborate with the Communications & Marketing teams to develop messaging and public statements regarding federal affairs.
  • Maintain and update the government affairs section of the ASLA website to ensure accurate and timely information dissemination.
  • Represent ASLA at conferences, webinars, and other events, contributing to discussions on relevant topics.
  • Adhere to ASLA's values and policies, ensuring compliance with standards of conduct.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communication, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • A minimum of four years of experience in federal government relations or congressional roles, with a focus on advocacy.
  • In-depth understanding of federal legislative processes and lobbying techniques.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong ability to create persuasive documents.
  • Political savvy and capability to engage effectively with members across the political spectrum.
  • Familiarity with issues related to water management, green infrastructure, and community development is advantageous.
  • Ability to collaborate with ASLA committees and volunteer leaders.
  • Strong skills in consensus-building and facilitation.
  • Knowledge of landscape architecture and the planning and construction industry is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and grassroots engagement tools is beneficial.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are essential.
  • Willingness to work in the DC office two days a week.
