Position Overview

Role Summary: This role is situated within a Military Treatment Facility, focusing on delivering high-quality healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Measure and record patients' vital signs, including respiration, temperature, blood pressure, and heart rate.
  • Analyze data from specialized equipment to monitor patients' heart rates, blood pressures, and other vital statistics.
  • Deliver fundamental bedside care, such as dressing wounds, changing bandages, inserting catheters, and administering injections.
  • Input patient-related data into electronic health record systems.
  • Conduct patient interviews and review their medical histories.
  • Administer intravenous fluids and medications as prescribed.
  • Adhere to established nursing standards and protocols for patient care.
  • Serve as an advocate for patients, collaborating with the healthcare team.
Employment Conditions

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting, up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for a Tier 3 security clearance. A background investigation and credit check are mandatory.
  • Completion of tuberculosis testing is required.
  • Appointment may be contingent upon a suitability or fitness determination based on a completed background investigation.
  • Mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination is required unless exempted for medical or religious reasons.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination is necessary.
  • This position is subject to the Department of Defense Civilian Employee Drug-Free Workplace Program, requiring urinalysis testing prior to appointment and periodically thereafter.
  • Flexibility to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed to fulfill mission requirements.
  • Designated as Mission Essential, requiring the incumbent to maintain essential personnel status during emergencies or inclement weather.
  • Must meet non-privileged professional credential requirements.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Qualifications

To qualify, candidates must meet the experience criteria outlined below. Experience encompasses both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations. Relevant experience must be clearly detailed in the resume; if qualifying through education, transcripts are required.

Licensure Requirement for Practical Nurse:

Current Licensure: A valid license to practice as a practical or vocational nurse in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia; OR must have submitted an application for licensure. Candidates with a license must provide a certified copy or notarized statement of the license. Non-licensed candidates who have completed training may be appointed pending licensure during the probationary period.

In addition to the basic requirement, candidates must also meet the following experience criteria:

Experience: A minimum of one year of nursing experience in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical facility, demonstrating practical knowledge of human anatomy and sterile techniques. Responsibilities should include obtaining patient vital signs, assessing patient needs, developing care plans, administering intravenous fluids and medications, and maintaining electronic medical records. This experience is typically associated with the next lower grade/level position in the federal service.

Some federal positions allow for education to substitute for experience; however, for this role, experience is required without educational substitution.
