Key Responsibilities:

Within the established binding authority, assess insurance submissions, identify exposures, propose coverage alternatives, and provide risk management recommendations while accurately pricing insurance coverage for small to medium-sized accounts of low complexity in accordance with company underwriting guidelines.

Achieve corporate objectives by evaluating account characteristics and taking necessary actions. Enhance your understanding of insurance issues, products, market trends, and pricing principles. Build and maintain positive business relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.


Daily Activities:

Utilize your binding authority and comply with regulatory filings to write and retain business that aligns with corporate goals.

Analyze various information sources to evaluate, make, and document decisions that lead to favorable underwriting outcomes for small to medium-sized accounts.

Identify potential loss exposures, suggest coverage alternatives, develop risk management strategies, and ensure pricing meets expected profitability levels. Negotiate solutions with a customer-centric approach. Decline or non-renew business that does not meet established standards. Communicate with supervisors regarding issues that exceed your binding authority and any territory-related concerns. Cultivate and maintain effective business relationships with the sales team.


Customer Support:

Respond to inquiries within your expertise and authority by researching, gathering, and sharing information to assist customers; offer suggestions on coverage options, pricing, and risk management alternatives.

Enhance your underwriting knowledge by staying informed about changes within the Underwriting Department, understanding the CM Group, and familiarizing yourself with industry coverages, policy forms, and operations specific to our niche markets.

Focus on meeting customer expectations by adhering to departmental timelines, assisting in various territories as needed, and fostering positive interactions with all customers, including Sales, Technical Support, and other departments.


Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree is required. An Associate in Underwriting designation or successful completion of two Chartered Property Casualty Underwriting (CPCU) courses may be considered in lieu of a degree.

7+ years of experience in a property and casualty insurance company is required. A bachelor’s degree may waive a portion of the experience requirement. Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and receptive to opportunities for improvement in efficiency and effectiveness.

In-depth knowledge of the underwriting function and insurance coverages and principles to manage complex insurance transactions, including reinsurance applications and administration.

Act as a subject matter expert and leader in Commercial Underwriting. Proven success in identifying and analyzing exposures, recognizing areas of concern, and developing suitable solutions. Strong decision-making skills within parameter-based situations while adhering to binding authority.

Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work closely with management to provide leadership through knowledge, confidence, and integrity. A commitment to continuous learning, accepting new challenges, and striving for personal growth. Support colleagues by sharing knowledge and fostering positive working relationships throughout the organization.

Proficient in utilizing CM Group computer systems and staying updated with changes. Ability to lead effectively in a team environment. Responsible and dedicated behavior to meet workload expectations and assist others when necessary.
