Job Title: Literacy Specialist for Elementary Education

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Literacy Specialist to join our team at Birmingham City Schools. This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the education of our students.

About the Role:

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing targeted support to students in grades K-5, focusing on literacy development. They will assess student needs, develop and implement resources, and collaborate with teachers and administrators to ensure effective instruction.

  • Provide leadership and consultative services to school personnel in developing and maintaining student assistance programs.
  • Maintain monthly documentation on each student, including notes on supports provided.
  • Gather, organize, and interpret assessment data to inform instruction.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional strategies and research-backed curriculum materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Model intervention strategies in classrooms, supporting general and special education teachers.
  • Analyze existing student achievement data and administer progress monitoring instruments as needed.
  • Collaborate effectively with classroom teachers, administrators, and parents to ensure student success.
Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Alabama teaching certification in Elementary Education, Reading, or Literacy, along with a minimum of 3 years of elementary teaching experience.
Preferred Qualifications:

While not required, we prefer candidates with:

  • A Master's degree in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or Reading.
  • 1-3 years of teaching experience as a reading interventionist.
  • Leadership experience, including conducting workshops, presenting to groups, and developing new materials.

  • An estimated salary range of $45,664 - $92,035 (Salary Schedule 16, Level 1-4).
