Job Summary

The Traffic Operations Specialist will be responsible for gathering and analyzing information on real-time conditions on the transportation network in NY/NJ/CT. This includes working with transportation agency contacts, police/local agency contacts, scanners, and various Intelligent Transportation Systems implemented in the operations center.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and analyze real-time transportation data to identify potential issues and incidents
  • Communicate with transportation agencies and other stakeholders to gather information and provide updates
  • Operate and maintain Intelligent Transportation Systems, including Closed-Circuit Television, Probe Based Travel Time System, VMS, and Event Management Systems
  • Identify and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, or system problems that may cause false alarms or missed incidents
  • Maintain accurate logs of all actions taken during shifts
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Ability to read/comprehend/understand maps (GIS/GPS)
  • Knowledge of the transportation networks, including major bridges/tunnels & interstates throughout the NY/NJ/CT region
  • Ability to analyze data (graphs, trends, information on maps, charts, etc.)
  • Computer skills (proficient in Microsoft Word with working knowledge of other products including Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment and work in high pressure situations
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently and as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with traveler information systems (511, travel time information, speed data)
  • Prior experience in a traffic operations center
  • Familiarity with transportation jargon (ITS, ICM, Connected Vehicle systems)
  • Strong knowledge of NY/NJ/CT roadways, bridges and tunnels
  • Monitoring/understand broadcasts (TV, radio traffic reports, Police & Fire scanners)
  • Familiarity with crowd sourcing
