About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Shop Manager to lead our machine shops in Berkeley and Santa Clara. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for the organization and operation of our full-capability machine shops, managing a team of Prototype Machinists, and collaborating with engineers to make custom mechanical parts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain our internal job tracking system, schedule and prioritize job requests, and adapt to changing priorities and requirements.
  • Work in Berkeley for four days and one day in Santa Clara weekly.
  • Improve processes using tools and data to make quality parts faster with more predictability.
  • Collaborate with internal program managers and other resource managers to develop processes that enhance our design and fabrication capabilities.
  • Manage a team of experienced Prototype Machinists to empower them to excel in their roles.
  • Create development plans to ensure the growth and fulfillment of each team member's potential.
  • Schedule and interface with external vendors for post-processing needs.
  • Conduct design reviews with engineers to advise on best practices for DFM (design for manufacturing).
  • Engage and manage the work of contractors in our shops.
  • Work cross-functionally to arrange and perform routine preventative maintenance on tools to ensure optimal performance and minimal downtime.
  • Develop, enforce, and train staff on safety policies for the shop.
  • Manage stock of materials and parts needed for proper tool operation, waste disposal, and other essential tasks.
  • Work with finance and leadership groups to plan and procure new tools and advocate for capital expenditure additions.
  • Machine and fabricate parts as needed, up to 20% of your time.
Requirements
  • 10-15 years of experience working in a machine shop, with at least 5 years of management experience.
  • Experience making parts, deburring/cleaning, and delivering parts to internal customers.
  • Familiarity with post-processing operations for parts such as anodizing.
  • Experience with creating and manipulating parts in CAD (Fusion 360, Solidworks, NX, etc.) and CAM (creating toolpaths in HSMWorks, NXCAM, MasterCAM, etc.).
  • Experience using a task management tool (such as Airtable) to schedule jobs and collect data for informed decision-making.
  • Experience and strong understanding of various fabrication tools and processes (CNC machining, laser cutting, welding, waterjet, plasma cutting, wire-EDM, 3D printing, injection molding, die casting, vacuum forming, etc.).
  • Experience working with various materials such as metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, etc.
  • Experience with basic metrology and working knowledge of GD&T.
  • Knowledge of and experience training on safe working practices for using machinery.
  • Experience using manual machines such as mills, lathes, drill presses, and saws.
  • Well-versed in using hand tools.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Team management experience includes hiring top performers, giving constructive performance feedback aligned with cultural values and company goals, working with direct reports to establish growth goals, mentoring, and helping direct reports achieve growth goals.
