Job Overview

Burns & McDonnell is seeking an experienced Project Estimator - Construction Management Specialist to join our team. As a key member of our estimating department, you will play a crucial role in preparing and presenting estimates for various construction projects.

About the Role

This full-time position offers a competitive salary of approximately $**80,000** per year, plus benefits and opportunities for professional growth and development. The successful candidate will be based in Kansas City, MO, with occasional travel required (approximately 10% of the time).

Key Responsibilities

The Project Estimator - Construction Management Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Preparing and presenting estimates for construction projects, including lump sum bids, proposals, unit costs, and quantities.
  • Assembling material and labor costs for clients and proposals.
  • Analyzing and incorporating quotes on bonds and insurance into estimates for review.
  • Conducting small and disadvantaged business solicitation and evaluation.
  • Conducting subcontractor solicitation and pre-qualification tasks.
  • Analyzing and inserting specialty and standard equipment and material pricing into estimates.
  • Preparing and delivering bid packages to subcontractors.
  • Presenting estimating information in site and pre-bid meetings.
  • Conducting subcontractor labor and market studies, and making recommendations based on those results.
  • Developing project summary schedules.
  • Evaluating and conditioning subcontractor and supplier quotes.
  • Supporting pre-construction services on client estimates and joint venture reviews.
  • Developing and presenting estimating strategy and plan.
  • Researching cost history and updating databases.
  • Providing preliminary pricing for indirect and general conditions.
  • Evaluating fee, contingency, and escalation and making recommendations.
  • Reviewing specialty and standard equipment pricing.
  • Reviewing plans and specifications for risk issues and proposing mitigation strategies.
  • Reviewing commercial terms and conditions for cost and risk items and presenting concerns to the lead estimator.
  • Ensuring the accuracy and validity of estimate clarifications and assumptions.
  • Analyzing and pricing value engineering for submission.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of direct project estimating experience.
  • The ability to work independently or in groups, think creatively and analytically, and make quick and sound decisions.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ConEst, K-Base, AgTek, and HeavyBid.
  • OSHA 10-hour certification.
