POSITION CHARACTERISTICS

The Recreation Program Assistant will support the Schoolmates Site Lead in all aspects of the program, taking an active role at their designated site. There may be occasions when the Assistant is required to step in for the Site Lead.


SUPERVISION

This position receives general oversight from the Recreation Supervisor and the Schoolmates Site Lead, while also providing guidance to part-time staff and volunteers.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (Illustrative Only)

  • Ensure the safety of children and staff at all times, maintaining a secure, clean, and organized environment.
  • Assist in various educational and recreational activities at the designated site, including sports, games, arts, music, health, science, nature, crafts, and both indoor and outdoor activities.
  • Support the Site Lead in preparing weekly and monthly activity plans; assist in executing approved program strategies with staff.
  • Address program inquiries from participants, parents, and community members, referring to the Site Lead or Recreation Supervisor as necessary.
  • Instruct children on the safe use of craft materials, games, and play equipment.
  • Set up and utilize a variety of recreational, educational, and cleaning equipment related to the program, as well as standard office equipment, including computers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Play-based curriculum and methodologies utilized in recreational activities for elementary school children.
  • Principles and practices of supervising recreation programs for youth.
  • Relevant rules and regulations governing the program and facility.
  • Techniques for delivering high-quality customer service while effectively interacting with the public, vendors, contractors, and city staff.
  • Safety protocols, including basic first aid and CPR.
  • Record-keeping practices and basic arithmetic.

Skills Required:

  • Plan, organize, direct, supervise, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
  • Train staff in program activities and safety protocols.
  • Interpret and apply policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate recreational activities for school-aged children.
  • Maintain accurate participant records (e.g., emergency contact forms, permission slips, waivers).
  • Handle medical emergencies and injuries calmly and effectively, including providing basic first aid.
  • Ensure facilities and program equipment are maintained in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established policy guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and community members.

Education and Experience:

Equivalent to an Associate's Degree from an accredited institution with coursework in child development, early childhood education, recreation, or a related field, along with two (2) years of experience working with youth in a group setting. A bachelor's degree may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.


REQUIREMENTS


Licenses, Certifications, and Vaccinations:

  • Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain First Aid and CPR Certifications.
  • Vaccination Status: Must provide COVID vaccination status information, and if vaccinated, confirmation of vaccination.

For the purpose of this certification, you are considered "fully vaccinated" if it has been at least 14 days since either the second dose in a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine series (e.g., Pfizer or Moderna) or a single-dose COVID-19 vaccine (e.g., Johnson & Johnson).

Successful candidates must pass a Department of Justice live fingerprint scan, background reference checks, and a Tuberculosis screening prior to employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Must possess the strength, stamina, and mobility to perform moderate physical work; ability to lift and carry recreation equipment weighing up to 35 pounds for extended periods; and flexibility to lift, carry, push, pull, or move objects. The role may involve significant standing, walking, pushing, bending, and/or pulling to engage in recreational activities. Visual acuity sufficient for computer work and other essential functions is required. Hearing and speech capabilities are necessary for effective communication in person and over the phone.


WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Employees work in a school setting with varying noise levels, controlled temperature conditions, and outdoor environments. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids while providing first aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for assigned recreational activities. Employees may interact with challenging staff and/or public representatives while interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.


WORK SCHEDULE

This is a part-time at-will position, requiring an average of 20-29 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, between 1:00 PM and 6:15 PM. Schedules may vary based on site and program needs, and weekend work may be necessary. Hours of work may not exceed 1400 hours per year. Management reserves the right to adjust work hours.


COMMUNITY OVERVIEW

The City of Piedmont is a charter city with approximately 11,000 residents, located in the scenic Oakland Hills, overlooking the San Francisco Bay. The city features established, high-quality single-family homes on tranquil tree-lined streets. Within Piedmont's 1.8 square-mile area, there are five city parks and numerous landscaped areas that provide wooded paths, tennis courts, children's playgrounds, sports fields, and picnic facilities.


BENEFITS

Employees in this part-time position, who work more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year, are eligible for the following benefits:

  • Retirement: Benefits vary based on membership date—Classic employee CalPERS 2% @ 60, employee share is 7%. New Members 2% @ 62, employee share is currently 6.75%. The City also participates in Social Security.
  • Medical: Eligible to enroll in the City's health care plan. The City contributes the minimum amount required by law toward the monthly premium for hospital and medical care benefits under the CalPERS Public Employees' Medical & Hospital Care Act (PEMHCA) Health Plan, which is currently $149/month. Any remaining premium is the responsibility of the employee.
  • Sick leave accrual earned at the rate of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked, with a maximum accrual of six (6) days or 48 hours.
  • Section 125 plan available for contributions toward health care and dependent care expenses on a pretax basis.
  • 457 retirement plan available for voluntary salary contributions on a pretax basis.
