Job Title: Patient Care Technician Job Summary:
The Patient Care Technician is responsible for performing a variety of patient care tasks and related non-professional services essential for meeting the personal needs and comfort of patients. This role involves providing fundamental patient care and assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) under the close supervision of a registered nurse. Basic patient care and ADLs include: bathing, feeding, preparing patients for treatment, taking and recording vital signs, changing bed linens, preparing treatment trays and other necessary supplies, and assisting nursing staff with various patient care responsibilities, ensuring that all competencies have been verified. The Patient Care Technician adheres to established guidelines to complete tasks effectively and works under the direct supervision of nursing personnel.
Experience, Education, Training, Special Skills, and Licensure:
Description Minimum Required:
Experience: Student Nurse in good standing who has completed fundamental patient care skills within their nursing program.
Education: Must be a student nurse currently enrolled in one of the following:
• Registered Nurse accredited School of Nursing program in the Junior or Senior year
• Licensed Practical Nurse accredited School of Nursing program who has successfully completed their first semester/term
Training: Student Nurse in good standing within an accredited nursing program.
Job Functions:
Non-Invasive Patient Care: Assists with patient admission, discharge, and transfer processes. Measures, collects, and records patient data (e.g., weight, vital signs) and reports any symptoms, reactions, or changes in patients' conditions to the Registered Nurse. Aids patients with daily living activities. Retrieves medications from the pneumatic tube system and/or pharmacy and delivers them to the nurse or places them in a secure location as directed by the nurse manager. Collaboration & Partnership: Assists physicians with examinations, treatments, and special tests. Collects patient specimens and transports them to the laboratory. Performs procedures consistent with the standards set forth by their nursing school and level of nursing education completed under the guidance of a Registered Nurse. Utilizes equipment safely for patient care as directed by a Registered Nurse. Quality Assurance: Adheres to nursing standards and institutional policies and procedures to enhance the quality and efficiency of nursing services. Utilizes all equipment, supplies, and resources in a prudent and efficient manner. Observes and complies with quality standards established by the department. Participates in continuous quality improvement initiatives. Other Duties: Performs additional tasks as assigned or requested.
