Position Overview:
The Senior Accountant operates with a high level of autonomy under the guidance of the Fiscal Officer at the Arizona Board of Nursing, engaging in professional accounting activities that necessitate the application of established accounting standards, theories, and practices.
This role serves as the lead accountant for managing procurement invoicing, recording financial transactions, reviewing and tracking grant expenditures, updating the agency's budget actuals, and overseeing payroll processing.
The responsibilities of the Senior Accountant demand a significant level of technical expertise and proficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
• The Senior Accountant is tasked with processing payroll modifications, managing credit card reports, overseeing fixed asset accounting, handling inventory, assisting in budget loading, and ensuring data accuracy and compliance with financial regulations. This includes accounts payable and receivable, travel expenses, general ledger maintenance, daily accounting operations, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and tracking federal grant expenditures. This position collaborates on various accounting functions such as ledger maintenance, transaction recording, budget actuals updates, and vendor interactions.
• Conducts ongoing reviews of ledger accounts for all transactions, reconciles reports and financial data, identifies and rectifies discrepancies or errors, and ensures proper allocation of costs to relevant funding sources.
• Leads the creation and revision of procedural documentation and aids in developing policies and procedures for the Fiscal Services division. Supports efforts to streamline processes related to Fiscal Services as needed.
• Provides training to Fiscal Services personnel, offers solutions, and makes recommendations for addressing identified financial issues, while researching relevant guidance on various topics.
• Performs additional duties as assigned related to the role.
Knowledge:
• In-depth understanding of reference materials such as federal regulations, Arizona Revised Statutes, and applicable agency policies and procedures.
• Comprehensive knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and government accounting practices.
• Familiarity with economic and accounting principles, along with the analysis and reporting of financial data.
• Proficient in automated financial systems and financial research methodologies.
• Knowledge of internal control frameworks and fiscal management.
Skills:
• Ability to collaborate effectively with team members and other agency staff to achieve common objectives.
• Strong multi-tasking capabilities and adaptability to changing priorities.
• Excellent analytical skills for researching and reviewing financial data.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Google Sheets, and Docs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Abilities:
• Critical thinking skills to resolve inquiries and issues presented by stakeholders.
• Ability to communicate in a timely, professional, and constructive manner with supervisors.
• Competence in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and interpreting financial data.
• Capability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
• Willingness to embrace change and acquire new skills.
• Bachelor’s Degree in accounting from an accredited institution; or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 24 semester hours of accounting coursework, accompanied by two years of experience as an Accountant I, II, or equivalent.
• Prior experience with AZ360 is preferred.
