We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Surgical Technologist II to join our team at UNC Health. As a key member of our surgical services team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Perform technical skills duties in all operating room specialty service areas, adhering to accepted standards of process.
- Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
- Follow aseptic technique, identifying and addressing contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique.
- Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies.
- Establish and maintain a sterile field, ensuring the team maintains a sterile environment.
- Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes to provide optimal accessibility during procedures.
- Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities affecting the surgical procedure.
- Demonstrate correct case preparation, assisting in picking cases and planning instrument needs.
- Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, communicating with the surgical team.
- Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
- Inventory, receive, and store supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
- Serve as a role model for new hires, on-the-job trainees, and other teammates, participating in teaching, guiding, and evaluating performance.
- Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment, assisting with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.
- Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
- Participate in data collection for research projects under the direction of an RN.
- Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 5+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through The National Center of Competency Testing
- 3+ years of professional experience
- Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies
- Strong communication skills/customer service relations
- Excellent organizational/priority setting skills
- Ability to function effectively as a mentor & team player
