Surgical Technologist II

The Surgical Technologist II is a key member of the surgical team, working under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
Responsibilities- Perform technical skill duties in all operating room specialty service areas, ensuring proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards of process.
- Provide proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization techniques of specialty instrumentation.
- Follow aseptic technique, proactively identifying contamination and/or breaks in aseptic technique and implementing corrective actions.
- Perform surgical counts, following policies and procedures for incorrect counts and reporting discrepancies appropriately.
- Establish and maintain a sterile field, assuring the team maintains a sterile environment independently.
- Assist in the proper identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
- Actively participate in the planning and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes in an organized manner to provide optimal accessibility during the procedure.
- Assist the surgeon, demonstrating an understanding of the patient's anatomy and abnormalities which affect the surgical procedure.
- Demonstrate appropriate and correct case preparation, assisting in picking cases and planning instrument needs.
- Recognize and modify scrubbing procedures based on pertinent information, developing modifications to standard approaches to care and communicating with the surgical team.
- Respond to surgical emergencies and follow hospital-wide emergency management plans.
- Inventories, receives, and stores supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.
- Serve as a role model for new hires, on-the-job trainees, and other identified teammates, serving as a mentor for Surgical Tech peers and participating in teaching, guiding, and evaluating performance during orientation and annual review process.
- Identify and report defective instruments, supplies, and equipment, assisting with restocking operating/procedure rooms and sub-sterile areas.
- Assist the registered nurse during the intraoperative implementation phase of nursing practice.
- Participate in data collection for research projects under the direction of an RN.
- Operate complex equipment and other resources in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology, or Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 5+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) through The National Center of Competency Testing.
- 3+ years of professional experience.
- Successful completion of service-specific portion of the UNC Health Surgical Technologist competencies.
- Strong communication skills/customer service relations.
- Excellent organizational/priority setting skill.
- Ability to function effectively as a mentor & team player.
- On-call (may be a requirement depending on the position).
