Role Responsibilities and Qualifications

The Perioperative Surgical Assistant collaborates with the surgical team under the supervision of the attending surgeon. This role encompasses the duties of both a Surgical Technologist and a Surgical First Assistant, adapting to departmental needs as directed by leadership. The Surgical Assistant operates within the defined scope of practice, performing clinical and technical tasks under the supervision of the surgeon to facilitate safe surgical procedures and optimal patient outcomes. Collaboration with the circulating RN and other perioperative team members is essential.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a surgical first assistant under the guidance and supervision of the attending surgeon, adhering to the limitations of preparation and experience.
  • Provide visualization of the surgical site through effective placement and securing of retractors, digital manipulation of tissue, suctioning, irrigation, and managing suture materials.
  • Employ techniques for hemostasis, including clamping, cauterizing, and applying hemostatic agents, while demonstrating awareness of indications and contraindications.
  • Administer post-operative local anesthetic injections as required.
  • Utilize suturing techniques for wound closure, including muscle and fascia layers.
  • Assist in the placement of implants as necessary.
  • For robotic procedures, perform subsequent trocar insertions following documented training and competency validation.
  • Under appropriate supervision, manage the closure of body planes and apply wound dressings as directed by the attending physician.

Qualifications:

Education: Candidates must possess:

1. A High School Diploma or GED.

2. Successful completion of an accredited surgical first assistant training program.

3. One of the following:

A. Graduation from a CAAHEP Surgical First Assistant or Surgical Assistant Program, or a Medical School Graduate, or an allied health professional with 2250 hours of surgical rotation.

B. Experience as a surgical technologist prior to a specified date.

Experience: New hires must have experience in a perioperative setting within the last four years in either a surgical technologist or surgical first assistant capacity.

Credentials:

Must maintain one of the following:

A. Surgical Technologist Certification through recognized boards.

B. Surgical First Assistant certification through recognized associations.

C. Licensed Surgical Assistant as per state regulations.
