The Patient Care Assistant serves as a vital support role under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. The Patient Care Assistant may need to undergo specialized training for advanced technical skills, such as phlebotomy, basic treatments, dressing changes, oral suctioning, and the removal of Foley catheters. The responsibilities may vary based on the unit's requirements. Additionally, clerical tasks such as data retrieval, maintaining supplies, and transporting medications will be part of the role. The Patient Care Assistant must thrive in a dynamic environment that demands multitasking and effective communication with the nursing staff and other team members. A compassionate and respectful demeanor is essential, along with the ability to follow directions from various healthcare providers.
Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions
Excellence in Patient Care: Collaborate with the healthcare team, patients, and families to ensure a positive experience. Patient-Centered Care: Foster a healing environment by addressing patient needs and adhering to the care plan as directed by licensed professionals. Engage patients and families in the treatment process and contribute to the care plan based on assigned tasks and feedback.
- Uphold patient rights and dignity.
- Ensure confidentiality in compliance with privacy regulations.
- Participate in regular patient rounds.
- Respond promptly to calls and inquiries, notifying the appropriate personnel when necessary.
- Address patient concerns or escalate them to the charge nurse when needed.
- Offer assistance and comfort to patients and their families proactively.
- Maintain a professional demeanor and show sensitivity to the needs of others.
- Deliver patient care under the guidance of the RN.
- Attend to basic patient needs, including hygiene, nutrition, and comfort, as well as advanced skills based on unit requirements.
- Assist the RN and healthcare team with care delivery as assigned.
- Support patient admissions.
- Monitor and document key patient safety information.
- Participate in charge reconciliation and perform audits as required.
Support the initiatives of the healthcare team and engage in performance improvement activities. Uphold professional nursing practices through shared leadership and ethical accountability. Transport supplies and equipment as assigned.
Effective Communication
Utilize strong verbal and written communication skills with patients, staff, and families. Document patient care activities accurately in the electronic medical record (EMR) and communicate any concerns or emergencies to the RN or Charge Nurse promptly. Maintain equipment and ensure proper functioning.
Safety and Infection Control
Ensure a safe environment for patient care by adhering to hygiene protocols and maintaining cleanliness in patient areas. Follow infection control policies and utilize proper body mechanics and assistive devices when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED preferred.
- Completion of a State-approved program for Certified Nursing Assistants or Patient Care Technicians preferred.
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.
- Certified Nursing Assistant preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Minimum of 1 year of hospital experience required.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Minimum age requirement for hire is 16.
