Job Summary

The Area Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring the company's compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations. This position will develop, implement, and audit safety policies across various levels, interacting with field employees, management, and customers. The Area Safety Manager will oversee HSE activities, provide leadership, coaching, and mentoring to Site Safety personnel, and offer technical advice to management teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and manage standards, processes, communications, training, and systems to maintain an injury-free environment.
  • Coach and mentor employees and management in safe practices and regulations.
  • Assist in preparing Job Hazard Analysis and Site Safety Plans.
  • Ensure a safe workplace without risk to health.
  • Provide adequate provision of first aid and welfare facilities and support.
  • Conduct timely assessments of risks to health and safety, implementing measures and arrangements as necessary.
  • Assist in selecting safety-related equipment, such as safety signs and personal protective clothing and equipment.
  • Liaise with other organizations and authorities to provide assistance and cooperation concerning audits and remedial actions.
  • Develop and implement strategies to control exposure to hazardous substances and dangers from flammable, explosive, electrical, noise, radiation, and manual handling risks.
  • Perform safety audits and inspections, reporting on health and safety practices and systems.
  • Review, prepare, and distribute audit reports and incident reports.
  • Train employees in areas such as fall protection, hot work procedures, excavation, scaffolds, hazard communication, control of hazardous energies, forklift operation, confined space entry, and other relevant topics.
  • Oversee subcontractors and vendors' HSE planning, performance, and compliance during their work.
  • Ensure that unsafe acts and conditions are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Provide technical expertise during incident investigations and personally investigate serious incidents.
  • Maintain close communications and working relationships with site project managers and other team members.
  • Ensure that appropriate corrective actions are taken to eliminate hazards.
  • Develop and implement procedures to eliminate hazards and situations discovered through lessons learned and investigations from prior incidents.
  • Recommend corrective actions and/or disciplinary procedures for violations of HSE rules and procedures.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Project Managers to drive positive change.
  • Promote and cultivate a safety culture within all levels of management, front-line supervisors, and employees.
  • Devise and implement new and innovative approaches to safety, keeping a safe working environment in the forefront of company culture.
  • Establish strategies, systems, and controls to ensure compliance with HSE policies and procedures throughout the area.
  • Ensure appropriate management of work-related injuries and proper care for injured employees.
  • Work closely with Workers' Compensation claims administrators to ensure all proper documentation is acquired in a timely manner.
  • Formulate, recommend, and administer approved changes to the company's Injury and Illness Prevention Program, SOPs, and other HSE initiatives.
Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in construction safety.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, including Title 8 and OSHA 1926.
  • 30-hour OSHA instructor qualification and/or EM385 course work preferred.
  • Competencies in fall protection, excavation, and rigging.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Professional safety accreditation preferred.
  • Active membership and participation in HSE professional associations required.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite software (Word/Excel) required.

Physical Requirements
  • The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • The employee is regularly required to walk and sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl (for purposes of filling photocopiers/printers).
HOURS

Monday through Friday, beginning between 6:00 am and 7:00 am, and ending between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm, with one hour for lunch. Eight hours per day is required, and occasional overtime may be necessary due to business needs.

TRAVEL

O - 5% of the time to and from the assigned office location to regional branch offices and/or to project/customer site(s).

COMPETITIVE WAGES

$85,000 to $120,000 Annual Salary. Applicants please note that actual compensation is determined by several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to job-related skills, depth of experience, certifications, relevant education or training, and specific work location, among others. The offered wage or salary is only one aspect of an employee's total compensation.
