Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Academic Support Specialist utilizes proficiency in English and Samoan to assist certified educators in delivering academic instruction and evaluating language proficiency for students classified as English learners. This role encompasses a variety of supportive services that require expertise in both English and the designated language.
SUPERVISION
This position operates under the guidance of a manager at or above the Coordinator level and receives technical direction from teachers or other certified staff members.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
1. Providing tutoring to students identified as English learners to enhance their English proficiency and comprehension of curriculum subjects.
2. Assisting students with academic challenges stemming from language barriers to promote their educational success.
3. Fostering a positive self-image and encouraging social interaction among students.
4. Grading homework and class assignments while maintaining accurate records of student performance.
5. Collaborating with teachers to identify effective strategies for meeting the needs of students.
6. Performing related tasks in program planning, execution, and operations for assigned students.
7. Serving as an interpreter and translating communications for parents of English learners.
8. Administering language proficiency and academic assessments in both English and the designated language.
9. Documenting oral responses in written form using state and district-approved testing methods.
10. Communicating with school staff and parents regarding test results and their implications.
11. Organizing and managing testing schedules and activities in coordination with educators and students.
12. Conducting one-on-one assessments with students.
13. Maintaining and updating student testing data and records.
14. Assisting staff in compiling necessary reports.
15. Traveling between work locations as required, utilizing personal transportation.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and Education/Training (Minimum standards for applicants):
Any combination of the following paid experience totaling one year: providing instructional support to a credentialed teacher, tutoring, offering interpreting or translating services, or administering language proficiency assessments.
High school diploma or equivalent.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Certain roles may necessitate personal transportation for travel to various work sites, a valid California driver's license, and auto liability insurance.
