As a key member of our patient access team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient registration process for patients in the Emergency Room and Urgent Care settings.

Job Summary:

The Patient Access Services ER Specialist is responsible for registering patients, collecting demographic and financial information, and verifying insurance coverage. This role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Register patients in a timely and accurate manner, ensuring all necessary information is collected and verified.
  • Collect and verify demographic and financial information, including insurance coverage and patient liability.
  • Initiate preliminary financial counseling and screening to identify non-funded and/or under-funded patients.
  • Explain and obtain patient consent for medical treatment and patient statement of responsibility.
  • Collect and scan patient identification and insurance cards, and secure patient photo for chart.
  • Initiate preliminary collections and financial counseling services to unfunded patients.
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to ensure accurate and timely billing and reimbursement.
Requirements:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a hospital or clinical environment, or in a related field such as insurance or financial services.
  • Working knowledge of patient access, financial counseling, and customer service functions in both acute and non-acute settings.
  • Ability to work multiple computer systems, including patient registration/accounting systems, document imaging, and scanning.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance terminology.
  • Ability to work in a high-stress environment with multiple priorities and deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Certified Patient Account Technician (CPAT) certification.
  • Experience working in a hospital or clinical environment, or in a related field such as insurance or financial services.
  • Knowledge of contract reimbursement, third-party payors, and insurance verification.
