Electrical Engineer for Traffic Systems

The City of Kingston is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Electrical Engineer to join our team as a Traffic Electrician. This role involves performing electrical work on traffic signals and pole-mounted outdoor lighting, ensuring the safe operation of these systems. As a Traffic Electrician, you will be responsible for installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal and pole-mounted outdoor lighting systems. You will also provide on-call support to ensure the smooth operation of these systems.
About the Role:
This is a full-time position that requires a high level of technical expertise in electrical engineering, particularly in the areas of traffic signal and pole-mounted outdoor lighting systems. The successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical engineering, including applicable regulations and codes such as the National Electrical Code and State of New York Standard Plans and Specifications. Additionally, the candidate should have good knowledge of computer and diagnostic testing, as well as the ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and electrical test equipment properly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, inspect, maintain, and repair traffic signal and pole-mounted outdoor lighting systems.
- Perform on-call duties to ensure the safe operation of these systems.
- Provide on-the-job training to Traffic Electrician Trainees and oversight to lower-level employees.
- Maintain accurate records of work performed and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and codes.
Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent required; four (4) years of experience in traffic signal and/or pole-mounted outdoor lighting electrical systems preferred.
- Ability to obtain a New York State CDL Class B license within six months of appointment.
- Level One International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Certificate required within twelve months of appointment.
- Level Two International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Certificate must be obtained within twenty-four months of employment.
- Obtain a City of Kingston Electrical License within six months of appointment.

Working Conditions:
- Work primarily outdoors with exposure to the elements, dangerous machinery, and potential physical harm.
- Frequent need to walk, talk, see, hear, or drive.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and perform other actions during the workday.
- Must be able to work at heights of 60 feet out of an aerial truck.
- Sufficient mobility and dexterity of both arms to safely operate power equipment.
Special Requirements:
- Ability to pass a D.O.T. pre-employment drug screen and physical.
