Role Summary
The Wildlands and Wildlife Program Staff Attorney is a full-time, exempt position focused on strategic legal advocacy concerning public lands, wildlife, and water resources amidst a changing climate.
This role will adapt to evolving social, political, and ecological contexts, allowing the successful candidate to leverage their unique skills and experiences. The Staff Attorney will have the opportunity to influence WELC's strategic direction, engage in mentorship, and establish themselves as a respected leader in their field.
The Staff Attorney will collaborate with WELC leadership and various teams, providing updates on advocacy efforts and representing WELC in diverse settings, including conferences and meetings with stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver a comprehensive range of legal services, including litigation, policy advocacy, and administrative actions.
- Stay informed on relevant laws, policies, and developments impacting public lands and wildlife.
- Foster strong relationships with clients, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
- Engage in public discourse regarding WELC's mission and the legal matters within the Staff Attorney's purview.
- Participate in organizational events, retreats, and training sessions.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Active membership in a U.S. state bar or the ability to obtain membership promptly.
- Experience working with diverse communities, particularly in the western U.S.
- Six to twelve years of legal experience, with consideration for exceptional candidates with varying backgrounds.
- Strong research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
- Knowledge of public lands, wildlife, and relevant legal frameworks.
- Ability to lead legal initiatives and utilize various advocacy tools.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and justice in legal practices.
- Proficient in building relationships in complex environments.
- Interest in interdisciplinary approaches, including scientific perspectives.
- Capacity to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Organized, intellectually curious, and committed to WELC's mission.
