Medical Assistant, Military Medic Professional

Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled Medical Assistant, Military Medic to join our team at Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University. The ideal candidate will have military training/experience as a Medic or Corpsman and be certified as a Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA).
Responsibilities:
- Triage patients by obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, reconciling medication lists, and preparing patients for visits.
- Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.
- Administer injections of medications or immunizations in accordance with approved protocols.
- Observe patients for reactions to medications, immunizations, treatments, and significant incidents.
- Cross-train with other clinical staff to perform diagnostic procedures, such as visual exams, ear lavage, EKG, Spirometry, and injections.
- Prepare exam rooms for patient visits, restock clinical areas, and maintain medical equipment.
- Document interventions in the electronic medical record, review charts for completeness, test results, and billing.
- Scan upcoming appointments for additional medical record information and obtain records from other physician offices, hospitals, labs, emergency rooms, and radiology.
- Complete tasks assigned to individual teams, including responding to patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agencies, medication prior authorizations, patient forms, and follow-up from physicians.
- Respond to patient inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Participate in staff meetings, education lectures, and quality improvement activities.
- Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety, and patient confidentiality.
Qualifications:
- Military training/experience as a Medic or Corpsman.
- Training/experience equivalent to completion of a Medical Assistant program.
- Certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA or RMA) or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
- Completion of BLS class and re-certification every 2 years.
