About the Role

The Mastercard Database Engineering team is responsible for ensuring the stability, scalability, and visibility of our highly available and mission-critical database systems and applications.

In this role, a Principal Database Engineer will work with our customers to understand their requirements and implement solutions to facilitate database stability, scalability, and visibility. This includes:

  • Collaborating with database architecture and standards owners to assess customer requirements against existing implementation patterns and assess compatible solutions against availability objectives.
  • Working with capacity planning teams and stakeholders to maintain detailed capacity and performance reporting and forecasts.
  • Formulating and driving action plans to prevent potential issues or mitigate active risks.
  • Generating structured reports on the health of the database ecosystem for an executive audience.
  • Assessing new technologies and their impact on our environment to proactively resolve any problems involved in their integration.
  • Maintaining business disaster recovery procedures for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Working with technical engineering teams to manage and improve processes, automating wherever possible.

Requirements

  • Subject matter expert level of understanding of Oracle Database 12c/19c/23c and replication products (Golden Gate, Dataguard).
  • Strong understanding of NoSQL and PostgreSQL databases with hands-on experience preferred.
  • Experience assessing application and business requirements to inform infrastructure and/or deployment topology selection.
  • Experience leading large cross-functional initiatives, often partnering with internal customers across technology verticals, expected to provide project direction and bring solutions to advanced technical challenges.
  • Operational experience running highly available and mission-critical platforms requiring 4x9s or better availability.
  • Track record bringing automated solutions to bear on large-scale environments with a wide range of technologies.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously under pressure without direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities and work with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Ability and motivation to learn new technologies quickly and with minimal support and guidance.
  • Strong people skills and the ability to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, organization, project prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Experience working in a global organization is desirable with occasional flexibility in working hours needed to enable collaboration with teams in other geographies.
