Job Summary

Kettering Health is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team. As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality laboratory testing and results to support patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform chemical, microbiologic, immunologic, hematologic, and immunohematologic laboratory procedures with limited independent judgment.
  • Correlate laboratory tests to disease processes and understand basic physiology to recognize appropriate test selection and abnormal test results.
  • Review work of lab assistants and students, and perform waived, moderately complex, and highly complex testing as defined by CLIA.
  • Report timely results accurately, in writing, verbally, by fax or computer.
  • Perform and record instrument checks, and quality control, and follow instruction for analyzer operation and reagent preparation.
  • Document and notify lab leadership appropriately, and demonstrate current knowledge of computer functions and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Actively engage in laboratory communications and staff meetings, and properly prepare samples for testing, including proper labeling, specimen preservation and transport and safe handling techniques.
  • Notify appropriate care giver by telephone of critical results and corrected results and document notification in accordance to policy.
  • Teach procedures for which you are deemed competent and evaluate trainees using established forms or examinations.
  • Understand and apply theory of disease process to testing and test results.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry and mathematics, and successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Science program or BS/BA program in related science that meets requirements for certification.
  • MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) required or (ASCP) categorical certification and a BS or BA in related science.
  • An associate degree from an accredited college/university in Medical Laboratory Science or a related science including 60 semester hours of academic credit including 6 semester hours of chemistry and 6 semester hours of biology or graduation from a military medical laboratory specialist program.
