Job Overview

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Culinary Support Specialist plays a vital role in our dedicated team of culinary professionals, committed to preparing nutritious meals for seniors and those in need within the community. This position involves mentoring junior staff and collaborating with the team to uphold quality standards as outlined in a comprehensive cleaning schedule. All Culinary Support Specialists contribute to maintaining the sanitation of dishes, utensils, equipment, and kitchen appliances, ensuring they are always ready for use. Responsibilities include thorough cleaning of kitchen floors and surrounding areas, managing waste disposal, and assisting in meal packaging and food preparation tasks as assigned. This role is perfect for a meticulous, patient team player eager to guide others in a large-scale meal production environment.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • A strong commitment to the mission and principles of Project Open Hand.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a commercial, industrial, or production kitchen, particularly in high-volume meal preparation.
  • A desire to foster teamwork and the ability to share knowledge and clarify processes with junior staff and volunteers.
  • Proven ability to adhere to and communicate kitchen department policies and procedures.
  • Capacity to take direction, provide constructive feedback, lead by example, and accept responsibility for actions.
  • Proficiency in English to facilitate effective communication in a fast-paced kitchen setting.
  • Experience in safely handling and cleaning kitchen equipment, including knives and other potentially hazardous materials.
  • Ability to maintain California food handling certification.
  • Flexibility to work various shifts, including early mornings, afternoons, weekends, or holidays as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS DESIRED:

  • Bilingual in Spanish or Tagalog.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead by example while working alongside junior staff and volunteers, sharing knowledge and clarifying processes related to kitchen sanitation and porter duties.
  • Comply with kitchen department rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Set up, maintain, and thoroughly clean dishwashing machines and sinks.
  • Monitor and record temperatures and sanitizer levels for kitchen equipment.
  • Manage waste disposal, including trash, cardboard, compost, and recyclables.
  • Clean, sanitize, and maintain all assigned kitchen equipment.
  • Provide laundry services as needed.
  • Follow the master cleaning schedule and complete additional tasks as assigned.
  • Organize and supervise product inventory.
  • Set up and maintain dining areas for staff and volunteers, ensuring all utensils are clean and ready for use.
  • Accurately complete food service and inventory logs in accordance with HACCP guidelines.
  • Maintain a clean work environment and adhere to all health and safety regulations.
  • Assist with basic kitchen tasks, production, and packing as required.
  • Execute food preparation and cooking tasks after receiving appropriate training.
  • Foster a positive work atmosphere while collaborating with peers and volunteers to achieve departmental goals.
  • Participate in kitchen training sessions and agency meetings.
  • Perform other kitchen-related tasks as assigned.

Physical demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand for extended periods, walk, sit, use hands to handle objects, reach with hands and arms, and communicate effectively. The employee must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds unassisted regularly and transport fully loaded carts between floors. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: The noise level in the work environment will vary from moderate to loud. The kitchen environment is dynamic, with staff and volunteers sharing limited space. It may include wet floors, temperature variations, and moving objects.
