Job Summary

The Ophthalmic Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Memorial Healthcare. This role requires a high level of technical and clinical expertise, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities
  • Interview patients and document their histories.
  • Perform technical workups, patient histories, and special testing, including refractions, lensometry, keratometry, tonometry, visual fields, and more.
  • Assist physicians with patient care, minor surgery, and scribes.
  • Communicate with patients regarding follow-up care, surgeries, procedures, and changes in schedule.
  • Maintain and clean equipment, reporting deficiencies to management.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Association) certification.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant certification through JCAHPO (exempt for applicants with a Doctor of Medicine degree).
  • Zero to two years' experience in a relevant role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years' related experience (equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered).
  • Surgical assistance experience.
