Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Scientist to join our team at Sterling Engineering. As a Staff Scientist, you will play a critical role in the development and support of AST (Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing) products.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with software, hardware development, and system engineering teams to support menu products on the platform.
  • Implement and support software solutions within the department and integrate them with the Vitek Reveal platform.
  • Develop tools for analyzing large performance data sets from AST experiments and provide detailed use cases for the software team.
  • Establish and manage configuration processes for systems and software, ensuring version control and traceability of releases.
  • Support biological testing required for software validation and system verification activities.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues related to AST tests and systems, document and report these issues, and propose solutions.
  • Prepare bacterial cultures and conduct AST experiments with clinical bacterial isolates.
  • Collaborate with scientists and managers to optimize testing protocols and workflows in the lab.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and results, and create work instructions, standard operating procedures, protocols, and reports.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ISO) and biohazard safety requirements.
  • Participate in product risk assessments, technical design reviews, and evaluate design and implementation plans.
  • Summarize findings and present results to cross-functional teams.
  • Mentor and train new and existing team members, providing technical guidance on data analysis.
  • Propose and explore new approaches and tools to improve testing accuracy and efficiency.

Requirements:

  • M.S. with 8+ years or PhD with 5+ years of relevant experience in Microbiology, Bioengineering, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in AST methods (e.g., broth microdilution, disk diffusion) preferred.
  • Familiarity with bacterial identification systems (e.g., MALDI-TOF, PCR).
  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance requirements for IVD products (e.g., QSR, ISO, GLP).
  • Programming skills (Python, R, or similar) for data analysis.
  • Familiarity with data visualization and analysis software such as Tableau, JMP, or Minitab.
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and collaboration abilities.
  • Strong organizational, decision-making, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment with tight deadlines and high-quality expectations.
  • Capability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively with various levels of personnel.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and a focus on product quality in decision-making. Lead by example and uphold corporate values for departmental success.
