POSITION SUMMARY

This role is pivotal in guiding the senior environmental operators, ensuring the smooth execution of operational tasks necessary for maintaining dependable equipment and compliance systems within the environmental sector. The position also encompasses various supportive functions related to environmental operations, including waste management profiling and groundwater treatment oversight. The work schedule consists of five days a week, Monday through Friday, with the possibility of shift coverage as required.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead weekday shifts by organizing daily activities in the environmental operations area, as directed by the Environmental Operations Superintendent.
  • Collaborate with maintenance teams to ensure timely completion of necessary maintenance tasks.
  • Oversee chemical operator assistance.
  • Manage and/or assist with site soil excavation initiatives, including hazard identification, excavation planning, permit approvals, and health and safety planning.
  • Conduct monitoring, troubleshooting, and analysis of treated and untreated wastewater to comply with pre-treatment permit stipulations, utilizing various analytical tools and procedures.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot the Thermal Destructive Device to minimize downtime, assisting with preventative maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Oversee the management of hazardous and non-hazardous waste, ensuring compliance with all regulations regarding shipping, receiving, storage, and tracking.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct weekly RCRA satellite inspections, addressing any irregularities in accordance with RCRA regulations.
  • Support the groundwater program through sampling and maintenance of treatment equipment.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping and operational readiness of the area, verifying inventory levels of lab reagents and equipment.
  • Monitor site utilities, troubleshoot issues, and assist with re-starting operations post-outages.
  • Handle stormwater discharges, odor investigations, and spill cleanups.
  • Collect and submit pre-treatment permit samples for external analysis.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on lab and treatment equipment, coordinating necessary repairs and implementing approved improvements.
  • Review and ensure current documentation for modified analysis and job procedures.
  • Manage the generation and accumulation of hazardous and non-hazardous waste effectively.
  • Provide coverage on various shifts as required.

LEADERSHIP & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not entail direct supervisory or budgetary responsibilities; however, it includes the training of other operators in best practices. The Principal Operator may assume the role of Environmental Operations Superintendent during their absence.

QUALIFICATIONS

To succeed in this role, candidates must demonstrate the ability to fulfill essential duties satisfactorily. The following qualifications are necessary:

  • Must be a Senior Environmental Operator in good standing.
  • High school diploma or GED with three to five years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

SKILLS

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and communicate effectively with various departments and external agencies.
  • Strong mathematical skills for calculating proportions, percentages, and volumes.
  • Problem-solving skills to address practical issues with limited standardization.
  • Required certifications include DOT Hazardous Materials Transportation, RCRA Hazardous Waste Management, and HAZWOPER certification.
  • Physical capability to perform essential functions, including lifting up to 50 pounds and working in various environmental conditions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment involves exposure to mechanical parts and outdoor conditions, with occasional exposure to hazardous materials and varying noise levels.
